Theoretical Introduction

Baroque art emerged in the late 16th century in Rome as a response to the Protestant Reformation led by Martin Luther. The Baroque was the artistic manifestation of the Counter-Reformation, a movement of reaffirmation of the Catholic faith that used art as a means of communication to spread its message and convert believers.

Stylistically, the Baroque is characterized by drama, exuberance, and grandeur in details. It uses pronounced contrasts of light and shadow to create a sense of movement and depth, and is especially known for its use of chiaroscuro, a technique that explores these contrasts, and for its complex compositions full of diagonals and spirals.

In Brazil, Baroque art manifested mainly in architecture and sculpture. Aleijadinho is one of the greatest representatives of the Baroque in Brazilian territory, with works that mix European and native elements.

Contextualization of the theme and its importance

Baroque art, more than an aesthetic manifestation, is a reflection of its time, marked by intense religious, social, and political transformations. Studying it allows us to understand the mentality of the time, the conflicts, and the aspirations of a society undergoing profound changes.

The Baroque has a particular importance in Brazil, as it was the dominant style during most of the colonial period. Understanding Brazilian Baroque is understanding a fundamental part of our history and cultural identity.

• Book: "Baroque: Art and Religion in Latin America" by Germain Bazin. In this book, Bazin traces the evolution of the Baroque in Latin America and its interaction with native cultures.

• Documentary: "Aleijadinho: Passion, Glory, and Torment" by Geraldo Santos Pereira. This documentary presents the life and work of the greatest sculptor of Brazilian Baroque.

• Website: Encyclopedia Britannica: Baroque art and architecture. Although in English, this site offers a detailed overview of the Baroque artistic movement.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: “Crossing the Baroque: An Artistic and Historical Immersion”

Project Objective

To provide students with a deep understanding of the Baroque artistic movement through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates Arts and History. Develop research skills, critical analysis, teamwork, and artistic expression.

Detailed Project Description

Students should form groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will focus on a specific aspect of Baroque Art: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, and Music. The groups should conduct an in-depth study on their topic and create a multimedia presentation that includes texts, images, and, if possible, videos or audios. Additionally, they should produce an artwork (drawing, sculpture, model, musical composition) that reflects the Baroque style according to their topic.

It is expected that the project will require more than twelve hours of work per student.

Required Materials

• Books, articles, websites, and documentaries about Baroque art.
• Resources for the multimedia presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Google Slides).
• Materials for creating the artwork (drawing materials, clay, model construction materials, musical instruments, music software).

Detailed Activity Steps

1. Group Formation and Topic Selection: Students will form groups of 3 to 5 people and choose one of the Baroque topics (Architecture, Sculpture, Painting, Music) to focus on.

2. Research: The groups should conduct in-depth research on their topic, exploring its evolution, characteristics, most important artists, most emblematic works, and how Baroque art manifested in that aspect in Brazil.

3. Presentation Development: Based on their research, the groups should create a multimedia presentation that describes and explains their topic. The presentation should include texts, images, and, if possible, videos or audios.

4. Artwork Creation: After completing the research and presentation, students should create an artwork that reflects the Baroque style according to their topic.

5. Project Presentation: Finally, the groups should present their study and artwork to the class.

Project Deliverables

At the end of this project, the groups should deliver:

1. Multimedia Presentation: It will include the research conducted by the students and should tell the story of Baroque art in the chosen aspect.

2. Artwork: An original piece that reflects the Baroque style in the aspect chosen by the students.

3. Project Report: As part of this project, students should write a report detailing the creation process. It should be structured as follows:

   • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance, real-world application, and the project's objective.

   • Development: The theory behind the project's central theme, activity details, methodology used, and presentation and discussion of the results obtained.

   • Conclusion: Recap of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project.

   • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used to work on the project.
