Context

Renaissance, a period of significant upheaval in art history, emerged in Europe between the 14th and 17th centuries. Marking the transition from the Middle Ages to modernity, the movement was heavily influenced by the revival of the Greek and Roman ideals, with Humanism as its main philosophical approach. Renaissance art is characterized by its quest for realism and naturalism, which can be particularly observed in the era’s paintings and sculptures. In fact, some of the most influential artists in art history belong to this period, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael.

The Renaissance had a tremendous impact on how we perceive the world and how we depict life and humanity in the arts. The reverence for Greek and Roman antiquities, the advent of linear perspective, the exploration of new genres and themes, the development and dissemination of novel techniques, and materials all contributed to the creation of artworks that continue to awe and inspire us. The Renaissance, therefore, represents a distinct break from the past and the beginning of a new era in art.

Activity Title: Renaissance Alive

Project Goal

The aim of this project is to allow students to explore and understand the Renaissance in a more tangible and in-depth manner by creating a "Renaissance Art Exhibition" where each group will be responsible for either recreating a famous painting from the era or sculpting a figure inspired by the movement. Further, students will also conduct thorough research on their chosen artist and the context in which the artwork was created.

Detailed Project Description

In groups of 3-5, students will select a Renaissance artwork of their choice and recreate it, whether through painting, sculpting, sketching, etc. The project also involves a detailed research paper on the original artwork, the artist who created it, and the historical context of the time.

Materials Required

Depending on the artwork chosen and the chosen medium of recreation, the materials required will vary. Some potential materials include paints, brushes, canvases, clay, paper, etc.

Project Steps

1. Artwork Selection: As a group, decide which Renaissance artwork you will be recreating and in what form (painting, sculpture, drawing, etc.). This should be done at the very beginning of the project.

2. Research and Analysis: Once you have selected your artwork, begin researching the artist who created it, the artwork itself, and the historical context in which it was created. Take notes and gather information to include in your final project report.

3. Artwork Recreation: The next step is to recreate your chosen artwork. Dedicate time and effort to replicating the details of the original painting or sculpture, always keeping in mind the realism and naturalism that characterized the Renaissance period.

4. Project Report: After completing the artwork recreation, focus on writing your project report. The report should include an introduction to the topic, a body that contains both the Renaissance theory, the discussion on your chosen artist, the step-by-step description of your artwork recreation, the methodology used and the results obtained. The conclusion should summarize the main points of your work, restate what you learned and any conclusions you came to about the project, and accurately cite your sources.

Project Deliverables

Students will submit their recreated artwork along with the final project report. The report should be in digital format, following the structure shared above. Teamwork will also be evaluated, so it is important that the entire process is accurately documented in your report.
