Theoretical Introduction

Neoclassicism is an artistic movement that, starting in the late 18th century, revitalized classical principles and aesthetics, mainly Greco-Roman. This movement proposed itself as a form of resistance to the excess of ornamentation and dramatics that characterized the Baroque and Rococo periods.

In Neoclassicism, order, simplicity, discipline, reason, and harmony are supreme values. It manifested itself in various forms of art: painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, music, among others. In this movement, the social and cultural dimension played an important role in giving meaning to works of art.

It is also worth noting the decisive influence of the Enlightenment, with its emphasis on reason and science. The interest in the past, particularly classical antiquity, promoted by the Enlightenment thinkers, provided fertile ground for the development of Neoclassicism.

Contextualization

Studying Neoclassicism provides a powerful lens to explore how social, political, and cultural values shape artistic expression. It offers valuable insights into how art relates to its historical context.

Studying Neoclassicism is a way to understand how art can be used both as an instrument to affirm cultural values and as a means of criticism and resistance. Furthermore, it offers us the opportunity to reflect on the relevance of these classical principles in contemporary art.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: The Influence of Neoclassicism on Contemporary Art

Project Objective

Our goal is to understand and appreciate Neoclassicism in depth, and investigate its impact and relevance in contemporary art. Besides the Artistic dimension, the project also involves the Historical aspect, becoming an interdisciplinary approach.

Detailed Project Description

This activity will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students, with a total duration of over fifteen hours of collaborative work per student. The activity will be divided into five main stages:

1. In-depth Study: Firstly, students must delve into Neoclassicism, its origins, characteristics, main artists, and reference works. Use the provided bibliographic references and other reliable sources for this stage.

2. Analysis of Works: Each group must choose two neoclassical works by different artists for detailed analysis. Students should explore the themes, techniques, historical and cultural contexts of these works.

3. Connection with Contemporary Art: The group must then identify two contemporary works that show influences or resonances of Neoclassicism. These works should be analyzed in detail, drawing a connection with the neoclassical characteristics and values discovered in the previous stage.

4. Artistic Creation: The group must collaborate to create their own work of art that integrates elements of both Neoclassicism and Contemporary Art. This work can be in any artistic medium (drawing, sculpture, painting, performance, installation, etc.). The creation must be documented in a photo or video.

5. Project Report: The final stage is the elaboration of a detailed report documenting the entire process, including the introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used.

Necessary Materials

The materials will depend on the artwork that the group decides to create. Each group should make a prior planning of the necessary materials.

Step by Step

1. Divide into groups and start researching Neoclassicism.
2. Choose two neoclassical and two contemporary works for analysis.
3. Discuss and plan the artwork you will create, and provide the materials.
4. Work together to create the artwork.
5. In the end, make a detailed report of the project.

Project Deliverables

In the end, each group must deliver:

1. Project Report: A written document detailing the entire process, from the initial research to the creation of the artwork, following the structure below:
   1. Introduction: Contextualization of Neoclassicism, importance of the study, project objectives.
   2. Development: Description of the research conducted, analyzed works, artistic creation performed, explanation of the elaboration process and applied concepts.
   3. Conclusions: Discussion on what was learned, the challenges faced and how they were overcome, reflection on the influence of Neoclassicism on contemporary art.
   4. Bibliography: List of sources used in the study.
2. Artwork: The artwork created by the group, documented in a photo or video, according to its nature.
