Contextualization

Welcome to this new learning journey! Our project will be about two essential nutrients for our lives: carbohydrates and lipids. But why are they so important? And what is the difference between them? The answers to these questions will lead us on a fascinating adventure through the biochemical structures that provide energy to our body and protect our cells.

Carbohydrates, also called carbohydrates, are organic molecules composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. They have an energetic function, that is, they provide the energy that our body needs to perform all its functions. In addition, carbohydrates are also responsible for other functions, such as structural and cellular recognition.

Lipids, on the other hand, are a set of organic substances characterized by being insoluble in water and soluble in organic solvents, such as ether and alcohol. Lipids have various functions in our body, including providing and storing energy, acting as chemical messengers, and being fundamental components of cell membranes.

Real World Applications

Carbohydrates and lipids are vital parts of our diet. Most of the foods we consume daily contain some type of carbohydrate or lipid. For example, bread and pasta are rich in carbohydrates, while meats and oils are rich in lipids.

In addition to nutrition, carbohydrates and lipids have a wide variety of industrial applications. Carbohydrates are used in alcohol production, fermentation processes, and the textile industry. Lipids, on the other hand, are essential in the cosmetic industry, cleaning products, biodiesel production, and many other products.

Practical Activity: 'Energizing the Body - Carbohydrates and Lipids in Action'

Project Objective

You, in groups of 3 to 5 students, will explore the universe of carbohydrates and lipids, conducting theoretical research and a practical experiment to better understand their properties, functions, and importance in nutrition and for the functioning of the human body.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, groups will carry out two main activities:

  1. Theoretical research: You and your research group will investigate the concepts and functions of carbohydrates and lipids. You will also research the structures of these molecules and how they are formed. You will seek to understand how the human body uses these nutrients, the breakdown of these molecules to obtain energy, and the importance of these nutrients in nutrition.

  2. Practical experiment: The experiment will involve preparing two simple meals - one rich in carbohydrates and the other in lipids. Then, the group will perform tests with indicator substances to identify the presence of carbohydrates and lipids in the foods.

Required Materials

  • Ingredients to prepare two meals (one rich in carbohydrates, such as pasta, and one rich in lipids, such as nuts and olive oil).
  • Potassium iodide solution (starch indicator, a type of carbohydrate)
  • Litmus paper or pH strip (acid indicator, present in many lipids)
  • Beakers or test tubes
  • Pipettes or droppers
  • Protective gloves

Step by Step

  1. With your group, conduct theoretical research on carbohydrates and lipids. Use the provided resources and others you find. This research should provide a clear understanding of how these nutrients work, their importance, and how they are formed. Document the information in a notebook.

  2. Prepare two simple meals - one rich in carbohydrates and one rich in lipids.

  3. Use the potassium iodide solution to test for the presence of starch in carbohydrate-rich foods. After adding a few drops of the reagent to the food, if it turns blue or black, this indicates the presence of starch.

  4. Next, use litmus paper or pH strip to test for the presence of acids in lipid-rich foods. The litmus paper should change color in the presence of acids.

  5. Document the process and results of the experiment with photos and notes.

Project Deliverables

At the end of the project, groups should prepare a detailed report containing four parts:

  1. Introduction: Provide context for the project theme, explain its relevance and real-world application, in addition to the project's objective.

  2. Development: Here, you should report in detail the theoretical research conducted by the group. Explain key concepts, the functions of carbohydrates and lipids, the structure of these molecules, and how they are formed. Also describe the practical experiment, the methodology used, and the results obtained. Discuss the experiment results in light of the theoretical information collected in the research.

  3. Conclusion: In this stage, summarize the main points of your research and experiment, explaining the learnings obtained and the conclusions drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: List all sources consulted during the research, such as books, websites, videos, etc.

The report should be submitted in digital format and should be between 5 to 10 pages, depending on the amount of information collected and the number of members in the group. Remember that each group member should contribute to all parts of the project, both in research and experiment, and in writing the report.

Remember: the goal of this project is to gain a deep understanding of carbohydrates and lipids, learn to work effectively in a team, enhance your research and experimentation skills, and develop the ability to communicate scientific information clearly and concisely.
