Context

Photosynthesis is a crucial process for life on Earth. It is through photosynthesis that plants, algae, and some photosynthetic organisms convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into oxygen and glucose. The latter serves as food for these populations, and the oxygen is released into the air, being essential for the respiration of many organisms, including humans.

In this project, you will enter a fascinating universe. By deepening your knowledge about photosynthesis, you will learn how plants carry out this process, what is needed for it to occur, and its importance for the environment. But we will not only stay in the theoretical field: you will create an experiment to observe photosynthesis happening in real time!

Introduction

Firstly, it is important to understand the process of photosynthesis in detail. It occurs in two stages: the light phase and the dark phase. In the light phase, the energy from sunlight is used to produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which serves as fuel for the dark phase. In the dark phase, the produced ATP is used to convert carbon dioxide into glucose, which serves as food for the plant.

Photosynthesis is a complex and fascinating process that involves several chemical reactions. Among the concepts you will learn are the chemical equations that represent the process of photosynthesis, the different pigments involved, such as chlorophyll, and the role of each of them, the importance of the Calvin cycle, among others.

Additionally, you will explore concepts related to Physics, such as the light spectrum and its relationship with photosynthesis, and to Mathematics, when analyzing the experiment's data. In the end, we hope that you will have a deep understanding of the process of photosynthesis and its importance for life on Earth.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Observation of Photosynthesis in Action

Project Objective

This project aims to study the process of photosynthesis, demonstrating practically how plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. In addition, students should understand the role of sunlight in this process and how different wavelengths of light can affect the rate of photosynthesis.

Detailed Project Description

For this project, you will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. For approximately four weeks, you will dedicate yourselves to creating an experimental setup to observe photosynthesis, collecting and analyzing data, and writing a final report.

Required Materials

  • Aquatic plants (e.g., Elodea);
  • Transparent containers;
  • Water;
  • Rocks (to anchor the plants);
  • Different colored lights (e.g., colored light bulbs or different colored cellophane paper);
  • Stopwatch;

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Planning and Preparation: First, the groups must plan the experiment, defining the hypotheses, necessary materials, procedures to be carried out, the time for each step, among other aspects.
  2. Experiment Setup: Anchor the plants at the bottom of the containers and fill them completely with water. The plants should be placed in different containers, each with a different color of light.
  3. Data Collection: Each day, for a set period (e.g., 6 hours), observe the number of oxygen bubbles that appear in the containers. Document the amount of bubbles over a period of time and record the data.
  4. Data Analysis: At the end of the experiment, analyze the collected data and create graphs and tables to facilitate the visualization and comparison of results.
  5. Results Interpretation: Based on the collected data and theoretical readings, discuss the results and initial hypotheses. Did light of a certain color stimulate photosynthesis more? Why?
  6. Report Writing: Finally, students must write a project report, which will be divided into four main sections: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Introduction: In this section, students must contextualize the photosynthesis theme and justify the project's choice. Initial hypotheses and experiment objectives should also be stated.

Development: Here, students must detail the experiment's step-by-step, the materials used, the data collection and analysis procedure, and the results obtained. Additionally, it is important to discuss the relationship between the results and the theory studied.

Conclusions: In the conclusion, observations made during the experiment, learnings, and difficulties faced should be discussed. The implications of the results and what they reveal about the photosynthesis process should also be discussed.

Bibliography: Remember to indicate all sources of information used during the project.

At the end of the project, we hope that you will have a greater understanding of the photosynthesis process, have developed important planning, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, and have engaged in a meaningful and fun practical activity!
