Context
Cell Division is one of the most fundamental topics in biology. It represents a process by which a parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells. During this project, we will explore in detail the two main types of cell division: Mitosis and Meiosis.
Mitosis is a process that ensures the accurate replication of genetic material from one cell to another. It is the fundamental mechanism of growth in multicellular organisms, but it also plays a crucial role in unicellular organisms, enabling their reproduction. The concepts of prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, and interphase will be explored, and their importance will be discussed.
Meiosis, on the other hand, is a process where a diploid cell divides into four haploid cells, each with half the number of parental chromosomes. This is a crucial mechanism for the production of gametes (eggs and sperm) in sexually reproducing organisms. Understanding the phases of prophase I and II, metaphase I and II, anaphase I and II, and telophase I and II will be paramount.

Project Goal
The main goal of this project is to enable students to achieve a deep and effective understanding of the processes involved in cell division, mitigating the challenges that pure theory often presents. It will feature a multidisciplinary integration with Mathematics when exploring concepts of proportion and relationships between cells, also stimulating collaboration, creativity, and proactivity.
Project Description
Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will have to create a three-dimensional model that represents both forms of cell division (mitosis and meiosis). These models can be made from conventional or reused school materials (clay, playdough, wire, papier-mâché, etc.).
The idea is that this be an extensive and complex project, which will demand at least twelve hours of work per student.
Required Materials
- Materials of choice for building the three-dimensional models (clay, papier-mâché, playdough, wire, etc.)
- Camera or cell phone to document the process and results
- Paper and pen for notes
Step-by-Step

Gather your group and plan together how you will build your models. It is important to research and fully understand each stage of the cell division process before starting.

Acquire or gather the necessary materials.

Start building the models, documenting everything. Take pictures of the process and write notes.

When finishing the models, take pictures from all angles.

Write a detailed report on the project. This document should include: Introduction (with the contextualization of the theme, its relevance, and the project's goal); Development (with the theory of the cell division processes, the detailed description of the activity, the methodology used, and the results achieved); Conclusions (with the lessons learned and conclusions about the project); and Bibliography.
Project Deliverables
Students will have to deliver:
- The three-dimensional models of mitosis and meiosis.
- A detailed report, containing pictures of the process, explaining the project's steps and the relationship between the theory learned and the practice carried out. In the report, students should show that they understood how cell division occurs and the differences between the stages of mitosis and meiosis, as well as explain how these processes relate to real life and how they were important for teamwork, time management, problem-solving, creativity, and proactivity.
- An oral presentation to the class, where they will explain the models' creation process, the theory behind them, and their conclusions.
