Enthalpy is a concept in thermodynamics, which is a branch of physics that studies the relationships between heat, work, and energy. Understanding and applying the concept of enthalpy is crucial for the comprehension of many chemical reactions that occur in our daily lives. It is through enthalpy calculations that we can predict whether a reaction is exothermic or endothermic, that is, whether it releases or consumes energy.

The calculation of enthalpy is also essential in industry and scientific research. In the chemical industry, for example, enthalpy calculation is used to optimize processes and to decide which reactions are more energy-efficient. In scientific research, enthalpy calculation is a tool used to better understand the properties of materials and to predict the behavior of new compounds.

Enthalpy is a physical property associated with substances, and its value can be determined experimentally through calorimeters, which are devices that measure the amount of heat involved in chemical reactions. The value of the enthalpy of a substance is directly related to how the molecules of that substance are organized and to the interactions between them.

Importance of enthalpy

Have you ever stopped to think why water solidifies at a specific temperature (0 degrees Celsius) and evaporates at another (100 degrees Celsius)? Or how do we know that the combustion of gasoline in an engine generates heat? All of these questions can be answered with the help of the concept of enthalpy.

Enthalpy is involved in practically all transformations that occur in nature, from the simplest, like the melting of ice, to the most complex, like the synthesis of new materials in the laboratory. It is through enthalpy calculation that we can determine, for example, the amount of heat an air conditioner needs to remove from an environment to maintain the desired temperature.

Understanding enthalpy and knowing how to calculate its value is fundamental for chemistry and many other areas of knowledge. Therefore, this project will be dedicated to exploring the concept of enthalpy and performing calculations involving this property.

Practical Activity: "A Deep Look into Enthalpy"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to explore in detail the concept of enthalpy and its applicability to the real world. Students should learn how to calculate the enthalpy of chemical reactions and understand how it is linked to concepts such as heat, energy, and work. They should also learn the importance of this concept for chemistry and other sciences.

Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will be tasked with choosing a chemical reaction from everyday life to investigate. The reaction can be anything, from boiling an egg to the combustion of gasoline in a car.

The students' task will be to calculate the enthalpy of this reaction, investigate the theory behind it, conduct an experiment to verify their assumptions, and write a detailed report of their findings.

Required Materials

  • Articles and textbooks on enthalpy and thermodynamics.
  • Proper laboratory equipment for the chosen experiment (depending on the experiment, this may include things like a calorimeter, a thermometer, protective materials, etc.).
  • Computer with internet access for research and report writing.

Steps for the Activity

  1. Initial group meeting to choose the chemical reaction to be investigated and to plan the research and experiment.
  2. Research and in-depth study on enthalpy and the theory behind the chosen reaction.
  3. Planning and conducting the experiment.
  4. Analysis of the experiment results and calculation of the reaction enthalpy.
  5. Report writing, which should include the following elements:
    • Introduction: description of the chosen reaction and its relevance to everyday life, as well as a brief explanation of the concept of enthalpy.
    • Development: detailed explanation of the theory behind enthalpy and the chosen chemical reaction, description of the experiment conducted and the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: discussion of the results, reflection on what was learned, and conclusions about the importance and applicability of the concept of enthalpy.
    • Bibliography: list of resources consulted during the project.
  6. Presentation of the report to the class and discussion of the results.

The expected duration for this project is about a month, with each student spending approximately five to ten hours per week working on the project.

By the end of the project, students should have developed a deep understanding of the concept of enthalpy and its applicability, as well as enhanced their research, experimentation, data analysis, report writing, and teamwork skills.
