It is the colligative property that studies the decrease in the vapor pressure of a solvent when we add a non-volatile solute to it, resulting in a change in the boiling point of the solution. To understand tonochemistry, we first need to understand what colligative properties are: they are the properties of solutions that depend on the quantity of solute particles, not on their nature. There are four: tonochemistry, cryoscopy, osmosis, and ebullioscopy.
This property is fundamental in various situations. In cooking, for example, adding salt when cooking food is not only for seasoning but also to alter the boiling point of water, allowing for faster cooking. Another practical example is on the streets during winter in some countries, where salt is spread on roads to lower the freezing point of water, thus avoiding the formation of ice that could cause accidents.

Project Objective
The objective of this activity is to experiment practically with the concept of tonochemistry, analyzing how the addition of salt alters the boiling point of water. Students should organize themselves into groups of 3 to 5 people, with each group responsible for conducting the experiment and preparing a final report.
Detailed Project Description
In this activity, you will measure the boiling temperature of water and then add salt and measure the boiling temperature again to observe the change due to tonochemistry.
Required Materials
- A high-temperature thermometer (at least up to 110ºC)
- A container large enough to hold 500ml of water
- Stove or heating plate
- Table salt
- Water
- Stopwatch
- Kitchen scale
Detailed Step-by-Step
- Fill the container with 500ml of water.
- Heat the water to the boiling point and using the thermometer, record the boiling temperature.
- Let the water cool to room temperature.
- Add 50g of salt to the water and stir until completely dissolved.
- Heat the water again to the boiling point and record the new boiling temperature.
- Repeat the process by adding another 50g of salt until reaching 200g of salt, always recording the boiling temperature after each addition.
The project should be completed in about 10 hours per group, spread over a month, and the final report must be submitted by the end of this period.
