Theoretical Introduction

Cryoscopy is a branch of Chemistry that studies the colligative properties of solutions, particularly the lowering of the freezing temperature of a solvent when a solute is added. This effect is known as the cryoscopic effect and is a direct consequence of the decrease in the number of solvent molecules available to solidify in the presence of a solute.

The freezing temperature of a pure solvent is determined by the amount of kinetic energy of its molecules. When a solute is added, the number of solvent molecules capable of acquiring enough kinetic energy to transition from the solid to the liquid state decreases. This leads to a lowering of the freezing temperature, as less energy is required to initiate fusion.

Cryoscopy is very useful in calculating the molar mass of a solute, since the lowering of the freezing temperature is directly proportional to the amount of solute present in the solution. Thus, by measuring the variation in the freezing temperature of a pure solvent to its solution, it is possible to determine the molar mass of the solute.

Contextualization

Cryoscopy has several practical applications that go beyond the classroom and laboratory. It is thanks to this principle that engine coolants are manufactured, for example. The lowering of the freezing temperature of water by adding glycol (an organic compound) prevents the engine from freezing at temperatures below 0°C.

Another example of application is in the making of ice cream, where the addition of salt to the mixture lowers the freezing point, allowing the mixture to freeze at a lower temperature, resulting in a softer and tastier ice cream.

Activity Title: "Evaluating the Cryoscopic Effect in Practice!"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to study the cryoscopic effect through a practical experiment. Students will be able to visualize how the addition of a solute affects the melting temperature of a solvent and thus conclude about the concept of Cryoscopy.

Detailed Project Description

Students will carry out a practical experiment in which they will measure the temperature variation of a system of pure water and after the addition of different solutes. In the end, they should create a graph showing the temperature variation as a function of the amount of solute added and identify the relationship between the amount of solute and the melting temperature, connecting it with the concept of Cryoscopy.

Required Materials

  1. Plastic or glass containers
  2. Thermometer
  3. Water
  4. Solute (Salt, Sugar, etc.)
  5. Scale
  6. Stove or heating plate
  7. Stopwatch

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Organize into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Take a container and add water halfway.
  3. Place the container on the stove or heating plate until the water starts to freeze.
  4. Record the temperature when the water starts to freeze. This is the melting point of pure water.
  5. Remove the container from the stove or heating plate and wait for the water to return to room temperature.
  6. Then add a known amount of solute (for example, 5g of salt) to the water.
  7. Repeat steps 3 and 4. The new freezing temperature should be lower than the melting point of pure water.
  8. Repeat the process by adding more solute each time (for example, 10g, 15g, etc.) and recording the new freezing temperature.
  9. Record all collected data.
  10. At the end of the experiment, each group should create a graph where the X-axis represents the amount of solute added and the Y-axis represents the freezing temperature.

Project Deliverables

  1. Report: The group must submit a report detailing the entire process and results. The report should contain the following sections:

    • Introduction: An explanation of what Cryoscopy is, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.
    • Development: The group must explain the theory behind Cryoscopy, the activity in detail, the methodology used, present and discuss the results.
    • Conclusion: The group must conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and the conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Books, websites, articles that were used for the project development.
  2. Graph: The graph representing the variation of the freezing temperature as a function of the amount of solute added.

  3. Videos and Photographs (Optional): Groups are encouraged to document their activities through photos and videos. This can add an extra and interesting element to the final report.

Students should plan accordingly to carry out this activity within a week, managing time for material collection, experiment execution, and report elaboration.
