Context

Chemical Kinetics is an area of Chemistry that studies the speed of chemical reactions and the factors that affect it. Among these factors, temperature and the concentration of reactants are two of the most important. Understanding these relationships is crucial not only for the comprehension of many phenomena that occur in our daily lives but also for practical applications in various industries, medicine, cooking, among others.

Group work provides great opportunities to strengthen teamwork skills, time management, experimentation, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Moreover, it is essential to engage students to delve deeper into the subject in a more autonomous and collaborative way.

Theoretical Introduction

In a chemical reaction, reactants interact with each other to generate the reaction products. The speed of this reaction is the measure of how quickly these products are formed or the reactants are consumed. Chemical Kinetics studies this speed and how different factors can affect it.

One of these factors is temperature. There is a well-known rule in Chemistry that states that the speed of a reaction practically doubles for each 10°C increase in temperature. This happens because the temperature increase makes the molecules move faster and, thus, collide with each other more frequently and with more energy, which makes the reaction faster.

Another important factor is the concentration of the reactants. The higher the concentration of reactants, the faster the reaction rate. This is simply because the more reactant molecules there are in a given volume, the higher the probability of them meeting and reacting.

About the Project

The project 'Chemical Kinetics: Main Velocity Factors' aims to provide students with the opportunity to explore these concepts in a practical way through conducting experiments. Additionally, it aims to stimulate them to think critically about the results obtained, write a scientific report, and develop teamwork skills.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Experimenting with Chemical Kinetics: Observing the Effect of Temperature and Concentration

Project Objective

The objective of this activity is to allow students to personally and in groups, in a practical and safe way, explore the factors that influence the speed of a chemical reaction, seeking to understand the concepts of Chemical Kinetics in a more applied manner.

Detailed Project Description

Groups will need to carry out two simple Chemical Kinetics experiments using easily accessible materials. After conducting the experiments, they should analyze and discuss the results, noting their observations and conclusions to produce a final report.

This project will be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and should take between 5 to 10 hours per student, considering both the experiments and the report preparation. The deadline for submission is one month from the project start date.

Experiment 1: Effect of temperature on reaction rate

In this experiment, the group will observe how temperature affects the reaction rate, using the example of sugar dissolution in water at different temperatures.

Experiment 2: Effect of concentration on reaction rate

In this experiment, the group will notice how the concentration of the reactants affects the reaction rate. For this, they will use baking soda and vinegar at different concentrations and observe the reaction rate.

Required Materials

For both experiments, groups will need the following materials:

  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Stove and Pan (or Electric Kettle)
  • Baking Soda
  • Vinegar
  • Transparent Glass Cups or Containers
  • Stopwatch
  • Scale
  • Thermometer

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

For Experiment 1 - Effect of Temperature on Reaction Rate

  1. Choose 3 different temperatures to conduct the experiment (e.g., room temperature, 40°C, and 80°C).
  2. Place the same amount of water in 3 different containers and heat (or cool) the water in each container to the chosen temperatures.
  3. Add the same amount of sugar to each container at the same time.
  4. Use the stopwatch to measure the time it takes for the sugar to completely dissolve in each container.
  5. Record the results.

For Experiment 2 - Effect of Concentration on Reaction Rate

  1. Prepare 3 solutions of baking soda and vinegar with different concentrations (weak, medium, and strong).
  2. Add the baking soda to 3 different containers.
  3. Add the vinegar to each container at the same time.
  4. Use the stopwatch to measure the time it takes for the reaction to stop in each container (observe the cessation of bubble formation).
  5. Record the results.

Project Deliverables

After the groups finish the experiments, they should prepare a final report. This report should be written and divided into four parts: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography.

Introduction

Students should contextualize the theme, its relevance, and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project. They should specify the factors that influence the speed of a chemical reaction and why they decided to study these factors.

Development

Students should describe in detail the process of the experiments conducted, explaining the hypotheses they had and the observations made. They should also present the results of the experiments, discussing them in light of the theoretical knowledge they acquired.

Conclusions

Students should conclude the work by summarizing their main points, stating the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn from the project. They should discuss how the results of the experiments relate to the concepts of Chemical Kinetics and what they learned from the experience.

Bibliography

Students should indicate all sources consulted to carry out the work, including books, websites, videos, etc.
