In Chemistry, a solution is a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances. This mixture is composed of the solute, the substance that dissolves, and the solvent, the substance that dissolves the solute. To understand solutions and the interaction of the solute with the solvent, it is essential to know three properties: solubility, vapor pressure, and concentration. These concepts are essential not only to understand the behavior of solutions but also chemistry as a whole.

Solubility is the ability of a solute to dissolve in a solvent and is affected by factors such as temperature, pressure, and the nature of the substances involved. Vapor pressure is the pressure exerted by the vapor of a liquid in equilibrium with its liquid phase at a certain temperature. Concentration, on the other hand, is the amount of solute present in a certain amount of solution.

Studying solutions is fundamental to understanding many natural phenomena and industrial processes. Understanding solubility can help us understand why some gases dissolve in water and others do not, which is vital for aquatic life. Vapor pressure is directly responsible for the boiling point of substances, influencing, for example, the cooking of food at different altitudes. And concentration has direct applications in areas such as medicine, where the dosage of medications must be precise.

Project Objective:

  1. Understand the concept of solutions and demonstrate that a solution is a homogeneous mixture.
  2. Study solubility, vapor pressure, and concentration.
  3. Practice writing a scientific experiment report.

Detailed Project Description:

Teams of 3 to 5 students will carry out a series of experiments to understand the concepts of solubility, vapor pressure, and concentration. For each experiment, the groups must record their hypotheses, procedures, observations, and analyses.

Required Materials:

  • Table salt
  • Sugar
  • Water
  • Precision scale
  • Several transparent glass containers
  • Thermometer
  • Measuring spoons
  • A kettle
  • Glass balloon with cork
  • Manometer

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Studying Solubility: In a container with water at room temperature, add salt spoons until it no longer dissolves. Record how many spoons were needed. Repeat the experiment with heated water. Compare the results and conclude about the effect of temperature on solubility.

  2. Studying Vapor Pressure: Fill a glass balloon with water halfway and close it with a cork, connecting a manometer. Record the pressure. Heat the water in the balloon and observe the changes in the manometer reading. Relate the pressure change to temperature.

  3. Studying Concentration: Dissolve different amounts of sugar in a fixed amount of water (e.g., 500 ml), making several solutions with different concentrations. Weigh each solution and record the amount of dissolved sugar. Relate the amount of sugar to the concentration of the solution.

Each step must be carried out carefully, and all results recorded for inclusion in the final report.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Written Report: Each group must submit a report with the following parts:

    • Introduction: Should contain the contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Here, students should describe the theory studied, the activity carried out in detail, explain the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
    • Conclusion: Students should summarize the main points of the work, explain the lessons learned, and draw conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.
  2. Oral Presentation: Each group must present their results to the class, briefly explaining what they did, what results they obtained, and what they learned from the activity.

This project lasts for one month, with each part of the experiment taking approximately 5-10 hours per student to execute.

Remember, the goal of this project is less about the perfect execution of the experiments and more about understanding the theory, practical experimentation, and the ability to collaborate and communicate among group members.
