Title: Lowering the Freezing Point: An Investigation on Cryoscopy
Objective
The main objective of this project is to develop students' understanding of cryoscopy through a practical, detailed, and engaging experiment. The activity aims to deepen students' knowledge of cryoscopy by applying the theoretical concepts learned in real-life situations.
Project Description
Students will work in groups of 3 to 5 people. The project should be completed within a month. The practical experiment is a crucial part of the project and should take 5 to 10 hours to complete.
Students will conduct an experiment to investigate the effect of different solutes (salt and sugar) on the freezing point of water. They will record their results, analyze their data, and write a comprehensive report on their findings.
Required Materials

- Salt
- Sugar
- 3 Containers
- Digital scale
- Thermometer
- Notebook
- Pen
Step by Step
- Weigh exactly 100g of water using the digital scale in each of the three containers.
- In the first container, do not add any solute. This will be our control.
- In the second container, add 10g of salt to the water.
- In the third container, add 10g of sugar to the water.
- Place the three containers in the freezer.
- Every 30 minutes, students should measure and record the temperature of each container using the thermometer. Be careful to gently stir the solution to avoid disrupting any forming ice.
- Continue this process until all solutions are frozen.
- Allow the solutions to thaw, recording the temperature every 30 minutes until they have completely melted.
- Analyze the collected data, highlighting the differences between the freezing points.
- Discuss the results in light of the theories on cryoscopy.
