Nuclear Reaction is a reaction that occurs in the nucleus of an atom. Unlike chemical reactions, which involve the redistribution of electrons in the outermost layer of atoms, a nuclear reaction involves a change in the nucleus of an atom. This usually involves a change in the number of protons or neutrons in the nucleus, and often involves the release of vast amounts of energy.

There are mainly two types of these reactions: Nuclear Fission and Nuclear Fusion. Nuclear fission is the splitting of a heavy atomic nucleus into two or more smaller nuclei, along with some byproducts. The most well-known example of fission is uranium-235, which can undergo fission when hit by a neutron.

On the other hand, nuclear fusion is the joining of two light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus. Fusion is the reaction that powers the Sun and stars, where the fusion of hydrogen produces helium.

Real-World Applications

Nuclear reactions have a variety of applications, from medicine to the production of electrical energy. In medicine, for example, radiation therapy uses radiation to kill cancer cells. In energy production, nuclear power plants use controlled nuclear fission to generate heat, which is then used to produce electricity.

Furthermore, nuclear reactions also play an important role in our understanding of the universe. Nuclear fusion, for instance, is what powers the Sun and stars, emitting the light and heat that allows life to exist on Earth.

Project Objective

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, and each group will be responsible for studying a particular aspect of nuclear reactions. There are three main topics that will be the focus of study: 1. Nuclear Fission and the Hiroshima bomb; 2. Nuclear Fusion in the Sun; 3. Nuclear Fission in a nuclear power plant reactor.

    • Development: Here, the group should detail the theory behind the project topic and describe the process of creating the presentation, as well as the results of the research and interviews. The methodology used should be highlighted and justified.

    • Conclusions: The group should synthesize the main points of the project and reflect on what they have learned, the difficulties encountered, and the solutions found. The implications of the nuclear reaction in their specific context should be highlighted.

    • Bibliography: All books, articles, websites, and videos used in the research should be listed here, following reference standards.

The total duration of the project should be approximately one month, and each student should contribute around 5-10 hours of work.
