Contextualization

Ebullioscopy is a colligative property of solutions, which concerns the elevation of the boiling point of a solvent after the addition of a non-volatile solute. The boiling and freezing points of a pure solvent are altered when we add a solute, that is, when we form a solution. Who has never added salt to pasta water to make it boil faster, right? However, contrary to common sense, adding salt makes the water take longer to boil because it increases the boiling point of water.

In practice, Ebullioscopy is used in a series of industrial and scientific processes. For example, in industrial plants such as oil refineries, fractional distillation, a process that uses ebullioscopy, is used to separate the various components of oil. Additionally, in very cold regions, it is common to add solutes to car fuel to prevent freezing.

Boiling and freezing processes are not trivial and are associated with colligative properties, such as ebullioscopy and cryoscopy. Colligative properties are those that depend on the number of particles (molecules or ions) of solute dispersed in the solution, regardless of their nature.

Activity Title: Ebullioscopy in Action: The Impact of Salt on Water Temperature!

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to understand in practice the concept of Ebullioscopy and how the addition of a solute (in this case, salt) affects the boiling point of water (solvent).

Detailed Project Description

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, will carry out a practical experiment to observe the change in the boiling point of water with the addition of salt. They will prepare two solutions, one of pure water and another of saltwater, and compare the boiling points. After conducting the experiment, each group should prepare a report detailing the observations, interpretations, and conclusions obtained.

Required Materials

  • Two heat-resistant containers (e.g., pots)
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Thermometer
  • Scale
  • Stove or heat source
  • Stopwatch

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Determine the amount of water to be used in the experiments, and the same volume should be used in both containers. Note the quantity.
  2. Add water to one of the containers and salt (an amount defined by the group, but note the quantity).
  3. Place both containers on the heat source simultaneously and start the stopwatch.
  4. Use the thermometer to record the water temperature in each container every minute until the water starts to boil.
  5. Note the time it takes for each container to reach the boiling point (when the water starts to boil).
  6. Repeat the experiment at least three times to ensure result accuracy.

Introduction: The report should begin with an introduction to the concept of Ebullioscopy, its relevance and real-life applications, and the objective of the experiment conducted.

Development: Next, it should present an explanation of the theory of Ebullioscopy and the impact of adding a solute on the boiling temperature of a solvent. Then, start describing the activity, including the necessary materials, the steps of the experiment, and the results obtained.

Conclusions: In the conclusion, a summary of the main points of the experiment should be presented, the understandings acquired, the conclusions about the experience, and how they relate to the theory of Ebullioscopy.

Bibliography: Finally, the report should include a bibliography section containing all sources of information used for the project.
