Science captivates us for its ability to unveil the mysteries of the universe, from the most distant stars to the intricate functioning of a cell. But science is also a powerful tool to solve practical problems of everyday life. Chemical Kinetics, the topic we will address in this project, illustrates well how science can be simultaneously fascinating and useful.

Chemical kinetics is the study of the rates of chemical reactions and the factors that influence it. It is a vital area of chemistry as it helps us understand how reactions happen and predict the rates of new chemical reactions. With this knowledge, we can develop better industrial processes, produce more effective drugs, protect the environment, among many other applications.

To bring the practical usefulness of chemical kinetics closer to home, think about the following situations: How could chemical engineers optimize fuel production in a refinery? How can we slow down the growth of bacteria in food? How can doctors adjust the dosage of a drug to ensure that it is effective but not toxic? All of these questions involve chemical kinetics.

Introduction

Chemical kinetics is governed by several laws and principles. One of the most important is the rate law, which tells us that the rate of a chemical reaction is proportional to the concentration of the reactants. This means that, if we double the concentration of a reactant, the rate of the reaction will also double.

Temperature is another crucial factor that affects the rate of a chemical reaction. In general, the higher the temperature, the faster the reaction. This is because the increase in temperature results in more kinetic energy for the molecules, which in turn increases the probability of successful collisions between the molecules.

Pressure and the use of catalysts are other factors that can influence the rates of chemical reactions. Pressure affects the rate of reactions that involve gases, while catalysts can speed up reactions by providing an alternative, lower energy pathway for the reaction.

Practical Activity: "The Impact of Rate Factors in Chemical Reactions"

Project Goal

The goal of this project is to observe and understand the effect of the main factors that influence the rates of chemical reactions - concentration, temperature, pressure, and catalysts - and how these factors interact.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for planning and conducting a set of experiments that demonstrate the impact of these factors on the rate of a chemical reaction. Students will explore the behavior of the potassium permanganate (KMnO4) discoloration reaction as a function of these factors. In addition, students are required to deepen their knowledge of Chemical Kinetics theory, through research and study in various resources.

Students will present a written report of the experiment results, including a full discussion on how and why each of the factors changed the reaction rate. This project will take approximately 15 hours per student, including preparation, carrying out the experiments, data analysis, and writing the report.

Materials

  • Potassium permanganate (KMnO4)
  • Dilute sulfuric acid (H2SO4)
  • Plunger or syringe to change pressure
  • Temperature-controlled bath
  • Stopwatch
  • Test tubes or beakers
  • Burette or pipette
  • Scale
  • Safety goggles and gloves

  5. Prepare a report detailing your methodology, the results of the experiments, and your analysis. Be sure to discuss how your findings relate to the theory of chemical kinetics.

Project Deliverables

Students should submit a final project report that should contain the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the topic, practical applications of Chemical Kinetics and relevance of the factors to the rate of chemical reactions. Indication of the project's objective.
  2. Development: Explain the theory of Chemical Kinetics and the factors that influence the rate of a reaction. Detail the experiments carried out, explaining the methodology used, presenting and discussing the results obtained.
  3. Conclusions: Review of the main points of the work, discussion of the lessons learned and conclusions on the factors that affect the reaction rate.
  4. Bibliography: Indication of the references used for the study of the theme and for the execution of the project.

This project aims not only at acquiring technical knowledge about chemical kinetics, but also at acquiring socio-emotional skills such as time management, communication, problem solving, creative thinking and proactivity.
