Nuclear Reaction: Introduction

Contextualization

Introduction

Nuclear reactions are processes that occur in the nucleus of an atom. These processes generate immense energy due to changes in the nuclear structure of atoms. In nuclear reactions, the structure of the atomic nucleus is altered, involving the conversion of one nuclear species into another. Unlike chemical reactions, nuclear reactions involve not only the formation and breaking of bonds between atoms, but also the transformation of these atoms through nuclear emissions or absorptions.

There are two main types of nuclear reactions: Nuclear Fusion and Nuclear Fission. In nuclear fusion, two light nuclei unite to form a heavier nucleus, accompanied by the release of a large amount of energy. Conversely, in nuclear fission, a heavy nucleus is split into smaller nuclei, also releasing a significant amount of energy.

Relevance

Nuclear reactions are of paramount importance for the development and advancement of science. For example, they are what keeps the Sun burning, providing heat and light to the Earth, nuclear fusion is responsible for this phenomenon. Nuclear fission, on the other hand, is the basis for the operation of atomic energy, used in nuclear power plants for electricity generation.

These reactions also play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of various diseases, nuclear medicine uses the radiation emitted by these reactions for exams and therapies. Therefore, understanding the behavior of these reactions is crucial for the progress of various areas of science and technology.

Activity Title: The Nuclear in Society

Project Objective

The main objective of this project is to allow students the opportunity to investigate, understand, and present in detail how nuclear reactions, specifically nuclear fusion and fission, are present and important in society.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3-5 members. Each group will be responsible for researching and analyzing an important topic related to nuclear reactions: Nuclear Fusion, Nuclear Fission, Nuclear Energy, and Nuclear Medicine.

Each group must conduct an in-depth analysis of their topic, covering the following points:

  1. Description of the nuclear process (fusion or fission) in the context of the chosen topic.
  2. Detailed explanation of the technical aspects involved.
  3. Analysis of social and environmental impacts.
  4. Schematic representation of the process using digital tools.

After the research and analysis, the groups must prepare a presentation for the class, explaining their topic clearly and in detail.

Required Materials

  1. Computer with internet access for research and presentation creation.
  2. Presentation software such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi.
  3. Books and articles to deepen the research.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

  1. Students should be divided into groups of 3-5 people.
  2. Each group must choose one of the proposed topics.
  3. Conduct in-depth research on the chosen topic.
  4. Organize the collected data and information into a presentation to be delivered to the class.
  5. Prepare a written version of the research conducted to be submitted to the teacher.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables of this project will include an oral presentation (where each group member must participate) and a written report.

The written report should include:

  1. Introduction: Provide context for the chosen topic, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the project's objective.
  2. Development: Explain the theory behind the chosen topic, detail the research process, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the project.
  4. Bibliography: List the sources you used to work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The report should complement the oral presentation, providing additional details and delving into specific points of the study conducted.
