In other words, the hydrogen potential. pH values below 7 are considered acidic, while values above 7 are considered basic. pOH is the hydroxide potential, and this measure is used to express the concentration of OH- ions.

The degree of acidity or basicity of a solution can affect many chemical properties, including reactivity, solubility, color, and physical state. Therefore, learning to calculate and understand pH and pOH is essential for understanding many chemical reactions.

Contextualization

To understand the practical importance of pH and pOH, one must consider their applications. In everyday life, these concepts are used in situations such as controlling the pH of pool water, so that it is in suitable conditions for bathing without causing irritation to the eyes and skin. The food industry uses pH measurement to control fermentation in food production, ensuring the quality and safety of products.

In medicine, pH plays an essential role in the functioning of the human body's organs. For example, human blood has a pH around 7.4, necessary for the proper functioning of the body. An imbalance in blood pH can lead to conditions such as acidosis or alkalosis, which are dangerous.

For these reasons, understanding pH and pOH, knowing how to manipulate and apply them correctly are essential skills in chemistry, extending to many other fields.

Activity Title: Understanding pH and pOH - An Experimental Investigation

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to develop students' understanding of the concepts of pH and pOH through an experimental investigation. Students will design and conduct an experiment to measure the pH and pOH of various solutions, analyze the results, and the connections between pH, pOH, and ion concentration in solution.

Detailed Project Description:

Students should work in groups of 3 to 5 and divide tasks. Each group will be responsible for selecting at least three different solutions to test.
