Contextualization

Solubility is an extremely important property in chemistry and has practical applications in our daily lives, from food preparation to pharmaceutical and textile industries. The study of solubility involves understanding when and how a substance dissolves in another, which is determined by various factors such as temperature, pressure, and the nature of the substance.

In this project, we will explore solubility as a concept and relate it to the real world, demonstrating how it affects our lives and the world around us. Some questions we will examine are: 'Why does sugar dissolve faster in hot water than in cold water?' and 'Why can we make a perfect lemonade by mixing lemon juice, sugar, and water, but we can't dissolve oil in water?'

Introduction

The study of solubility is fundamental to understanding various chemical processes. Solubility is the maximum amount of a substance that can dissolve in a certain volume of solvent at a specific temperature. It is measured in grams of solute per 100 g of solvent.

From a molecular perspective, solubility can be understood as the balance between the attractive forces of the solute and the solvent. When a substance dissolves in another, the solute molecules disperse among the solvent molecules. If the attractive forces between the solute and the solvent are strong enough, the solute molecules disperse completely, resulting in a solution.

Increasing the temperature generally increases the solubility of solids in liquids, but the effect of temperature on the solubility of gases in liquids is the opposite. This is due to the different natures of solids and gases.

Practical Activity

Title: 'Understanding Solubility'

Project Objectives:

  1. Understand the concept of solubility and how it is affected by different factors, especially temperature.
  2. Observe the process of dissolving solid substances in liquids.

Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people and will be tasked with investigating how the solubility of a solute (salt or sugar, for example) is affected by changes in the solvent's temperature (water). Students should plan and conduct an experiment, collect and analyze data, and finally write a detailed report on their findings.

Required Materials:

  1. Salt and/or sugar
  2. Water
  3. Beakers or similar cups
  4. Thermometer
  5. Scale
  6. Stove or means to heat the water
  7. Spoon for stirring

Experimental Procedure:

  1. Planning: Each group should discuss and plan how they will conduct the experiment. They should decide which solute will be used, how the water temperature will be changed, and how data will be collected and recorded.

  2. Preparation: The water should be heated to various temperatures. With each temperature change, a certain amount of solute should be added to the water.

  3. Execution: If the solution is saturated, meaning if the solute stops dissolving, the amount of undissolved solute should be noted along with the corresponding temperature. This procedure should be repeated for different temperatures.

  4. Data Analysis: Students should create a solubility graph as a function of temperature, analyze the results, and discuss their observations.

Project Deliverables:

At the end of the project, students should write a report that includes:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of this project.

  2. Development: The theory behind solubility, explanation of the activity in detail, indication of the methodology used, and discussion of the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Recap of the main points, explanation of the learnings obtained, and conclusions drawn from the project.

  4. Bibliography: Sources they relied on to work on the project.

This report should complement the practical work, elucidating the theory behind the practice and discussing the results found, relating them to the theory of solubility. The report should be clear, coherent, and well-structured, demonstrating the learning and collaborative work developed by the group during the project.
