Introduction

Adjectives and adverbs are two of the main elements of the English language that serve to describe and provide more information about nouns and verbs, respectively. Adjectives are words that modify a noun, describing its characteristics or states, while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and even other adverbs, providing us with information on how, when, where, and to what extent an action occurs.

It is common for English learners to first learn about adjectives, as many can be easily translated from other languages and are used in a similar way. However, adverbs can be a bit more challenging. Adverbs have many more functions and are much more flexible in terms of where they can be placed in a sentence. Additionally, adverbs are not just words ending in 'ly'!

The importance of adjectives and adverbs

Learning and properly understanding the use of adjectives and adverbs in English is essential for effective communication. They add details and descriptions to speech and writing, allowing us to express thoughts and ideas more clearly and accurately.

The words we use and how we use them can have a significant impact on how we are perceived by others. Effective language, which includes the proper use of adjectives and adverbs, can help us create a positive impression in social and professional situations. For example, describing a movie as 'dramatic and exciting' instead of just 'good' provides a much more vivid and intriguing image for the listener.

Practical Activity: 'Adjectives & Adverbs in Action!'

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to allow students to apply their knowledge of adjectives and adverbs in a real and fun context. Students will create and perform a short English-language play, where the use of adjectives and adverbs will be the central focus.

Project Description

Each group should select a short story, which can be a fairy tale, a fable, a myth, a legend, or a popular anecdote. The story should be adapted into a theater script and performed by the students. The challenge is to use as many adjectives and adverbs in the script to describe the scenes, characters, and their actions.

Required Materials

Computer with internet access, camera to film the play (can be a phone camera), costumes and props for the characters, and a location for recording the play.

Step-by-step for project completion

1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.
2. Each group should choose a story to adapt. The story should be complex enough to allow for a wide use of adjectives and adverbs.
3. Each group should then adapt the story into a theater script. The script should be written entirely in English and make abundant use of adjectives and adverbs.
4. Next, the groups should rehearse and record the play. The play should last between 10 to 15 minutes.
5. Finally, the students should watch their recording, take notes of the adjectives and adverbs they used, and reflect on how these words contributed to the story.

Project Deliverables

Each group should produce:

1. English script: This document should have the chosen story and the transcription of all character dialogues. Highlight the adjectives and adverbs used.

2. Video of the performance: The play should be recorded and delivered in video format. This will allow for evaluation of pronunciation, intonation, and vocabulary usage.

3. Written report: The report should be divided into four main topics:

   • Introduction: they should contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application as well as the objective of this project.
   • Development: they should explain the theory behind adjectives and adverbs, detail the activity they carried out, the methodology they used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
   • Conclusion: the students should summarize the main points of the work, state the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
   • Bibliography: indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as blogs, websites, videos, etc.

The deadline for submitting all parts of the project is one month from the project start date.
