Theoretical Introduction

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty, which was signed in 1949. The organization constitutes a system of collective defense whereby its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by an external entity.

While NATO was originally founded in response to the Soviet threat during the Cold War, the organization has undergone considerable evolution in recent decades. After the end of the Cold War, NATO repositioned itself as an organization that could address a variety of security threats, including terrorism. Combating terrorism has become one of NATO's focuses, especially after the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States.

Terrorism, in turn, is a widely discussed and often misunderstood term. In the context of this project, we will adopt NATO's definition of terrorism, which sees it as the calculated use of violence or the threat of violence to achieve political, religious, or ideological goals through intimidation, coercion, or instilling fear.

Contextualization

The relationship between NATO and the fight against terrorism is of vital importance in modern times. We are living in a period of history marked by unconventional conflicts, where terrorism has played a crucial role. NATO's fight against terrorism is an important topic because it shapes how the international community responds to these threats and has direct implications for global peace and security.

Furthermore, understanding how NATO deals with terrorism can provide insights into how entities can cooperate on a global scale to address common threats. The strategies used by NATO involve international coordination, information sharing, and a focus on preventing terrorism rather than just responding to it. These are principles that can be applied to other global security threats, making the study of this topic relevant to a variety of fields of study and professions.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Building NATO Strategies against Terrorism"

Project Objective

To understand how NATO operates in combating terrorism, students will simulate a scenario in which they are members of a NATO advisory council, tasked with creating a strategic plan to combat an emerging terrorist threat.

Detailed Project Description

Divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, students will have to develop a robust and well-founded strategy that NATO could use to respond to a fictional terrorist threat of their creation. The strategy should consider NATO's basic principles, its structure, resources, and strategic priorities. Additionally, it should address the issue of terrorism from prevention to response.

Required Materials

• Internet access for research.
• Computer or laptop for presentation preparation.
• Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.).
• Video camera or webcam for recording presentations.

Project Step-by-Step

1. Research and Review (2-3 hours)

   Study in-depth the recommended resources at the beginning of this project. Understand NATO's structure, capabilities and limitations, its main strategies and approaches in combating terrorism.

2. Creating a Scenario (1-2 hours)

   Create a fictional terrorist threat. Carefully consider what this threat could look like, where it would be based, what its objectives and methods would be, and how big a threat it would be to global security.

3. Developing a Strategy (4-5 hours)

   Develop a comprehensive strategy on how NATO would respond to this terrorist threat. Make sure to address prevention, detection, response, and recovery. Use the knowledge you gathered in the first phase of the project to inform your strategy.

4. Presenting the Strategy (2 hours)

   Prepare a video presentation of your strategy. Each group member should have a role in the presentation. Make sure to clearly explain the terrorist threat, NATO's response, and the reasons behind your strategic choices.

5. Writing the Written Document (1-2 hours)

   Finally, work together to organize a written report detailing the above steps. The report should include a brief introduction to the topic, a detailed explanation of the created scenario (terrorist threat), the strategy adopted to combat it, and the theoretical justification behind the strategy. The report should also include the learnings and conclusions about the activity carried out. Finally, include all bibliographic references used during the research.

The project should be delivered in two formats: a video with the presentation of the developed strategy and a written report with all project steps clearly detailed and justified.

Remember, the goal of this project is for students to collaborate effectively and learn about NATO and its fight against terrorism in a practical and meaningful context. This requires students to demonstrate time management, clear communication, critical thinking, and the ability to work collaboratively.
