Contextualization

The Amazon is the world's largest tropical rainforest and home to an unprecedented biodiversity. It is a biome of vital importance for the regulation of the global climate and water cycle. The forest represents more than 50% of the remaining tropical forests in the world. It spans nine countries, and over 60% of the forest is contained within Brazil.

The Amazon is best known for its lush vegetation, which includes thousands of tree species and millions of insect species. However, the region is also rich in culture and traditions. Several indigenous communities, quilombolas, and other traditional communities live in the Amazon, and many of these communities maintain distinct ways of life and modes of interaction with nature that have endured for centuries.

This project aims to help understand the complexity of the Amazon and the importance of its ecological, economic, and social role. The concepts of biomes, ecosystems, ecosystem services, sustainable development, environmental impacts, green economy, and the rights of traditional communities will be explored and contextualized in the Amazon.

Importance of the Amazon

The Amazon is one of the most important regions in the world for the balance of the planet's climate. It plays a crucial role in regulating the global water cycle and stabilizing the climate. Additionally, the Amazon has more plant and animal species than any other ecosystem on Earth, giving it greater biodiversity than any other biome.

In addition to its ecological role, the Amazon also has significant economic and social importance. The forest provides a variety of essential products, including wood, food, medicine, and fibers. The traditional ways of life of the communities living in the Amazon are closely linked to the forest and its resources. They have a deep knowledge of the environment and its complexity and play a fundamental role in its conservation and sustainable management.

Studying the Amazon, therefore, is not only about understanding a complex ecosystem but also about discovering ways to live in harmony with nature and learning to value cultural and biological diversity.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Eco-Amazon: Exploring the Forest"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to conduct in-depth research on the Amazon: its biomes, economy, and environmental impacts. In addition, students should establish a direct connection with the reality of the Amazon, through contact with local communities and researchers. The results will be presented through the creation of an interactive and digital mural, exploring the relationship between the social, economic, and environmental components of the Amazon biome.

Detailed Project Description:

Student groups should first dedicate themselves to in-depth research on the Amazon, its physical characteristics such as vegetation and fauna, regional economy, environmental impacts, and the relationship of traditional communities with this environment. This research should be multidisciplinary, involving knowledge of geography, biology, and history.

After the in-depth study, the groups should contact research institutions or communities located in the Amazon. Through interviews, students will have a closer look at the local reality. If it is not possible to interview residents, interviews can be conducted with researchers studying the region.

With the data in hand, the group should create an interactive and digital mural that brings together everything that has been learned, in an attractive and engaging way.

Required Materials:

• Computer with internet access;
• Text and video editing software (Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Adobe Premiere, iMovie, etc.);
• Platform for creating the mural (such as Padlet, Google Slides, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

Step 1: Theoretical Research Divide the topics among group members. Use books, scientific articles, documentaries, and reliable websites for research. Remember to take note of all sources used.

Step 2: Interview with Professionals or Residents Contact research institutions, universities, NGOs, indigenous communities, or quilombolas. In the case of interviews, prepare a list of questions in advance.

Step 3: Group Meeting Discuss the information obtained and exchange acquired knowledge. Develop a synthesis containing the most important points.

Step 4: Mural Creation Use available resources to create an interactive and attractive digital mural. Use videos, audios, images, and texts.

Step 5: Preparation of the Report Students should write a document reporting in the form of a report on the project. The report should contain four main parts.

• Introduction: Provide context for the theme, indicate its relevance, and show the purpose of the project.
• Development: In this topic, mention the theory learned, explain the activity in detail, present the methodology used, and comment on the results obtained.
• Conclusion: Summarize the main points, including the lessons learned and conclusions drawn from the project.
• Bibliography: Cite all sources used for the project.

Project Deliverables:

• Interactive digital mural: the mural should be public and easy to navigate.
• Final report: a document of at least 10 pages on the project.

By working on the mural and report, students will apply learned concepts, reflect on the economic and socio-environmental impacts in the Amazon, and formulate criticisms and proposals. They will also develop socio-emotional skills such as communication, time management, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.
