Contextualization and Introduction to the Project

Introduction

On our journey towards a geopolitical and historical understanding of Latin America, we found the necessity to understand the political currents that have shaped our current configuration. Among these, the political left is a figure of great importance, therefore, we will embark on an exploration of the Progressive Governments in Latin America, investigating their origins, ideologies, implementations, achievements, and challenges.

Left-wing governments in Latin America emerged as a response to the historical and social context of the 20th century, which was marked by severe economic and social inequalities. Their proposal was to promote greater social and economic equity through public policies and structural reforms. Influenced both by the Cuban Revolution and by various strands of socialism and global communism, the Latin American left is characterized by diversity, ranging from social democratic governments to Marxist-Leninist oriented ones.

Studying these governments and their actions not only gives us a better understanding of our history but also allows us to critically evaluate their contributions and failures, permitting us to comprehend the complex Latin American political scenario, its power disputes, popular struggles, and the conflicts between different political actors.

Contextualization

Left-wing governments in Latin America marked a large part of the early 21st century, in what has been called the pink tide cycle. Countries like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Venezuela, Ecuador, among others, elected governments that declared themselves left-wing or center-left, proportions unseen before in the history of the region. The study of this period is fundamental not only because of its implications for national realities, but also because of its regional and international issues.

The role of these governments in reducing poverty, agrarian reforms, education, health, and other public policies is a topic of great importance. This analysis will allow us to question and understand the logic and scope of such policies, their characteristics, and their impact on the social structure, as well as their limitations and challenges.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: “Progressive Governments in Latin America: An In-Depth Analysis”

Project Goal

Through a group investigation on the left-wing governments in Latin America, students should acquire a deep understanding of the multiple aspects that involve these governments, focusing on a specific country of their choice. They should develop research, critical analysis, teamwork, and effective communication skills.

Detailed Description of the Project

Each group of 3 to 5 students will choose a Latin American country that has had a left-wing or center-left government at some point during the 21st century. They should research and analyze the following areas of this government:

1. Ideological foundations and origins of the political parties.
2. Main public policies implemented and their implications.
3. Social, economic, and environmental impacts of these policies.
4. Repercussions on the region and/or internationally.
5. Challenges and criticisms faced by the government.

Required Materials

No special materials are required for the project, groups will only need resources for research such as books, academic articles, reliable newspapers, and documentaries.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide to Carry Out the Activity

1. Group formation: Students should form groups of 3 to 5 people.
2. Country Selection: Each group will choose a country in Latin America to carry out their research.
3. Research and Group Meetings: Throughout the week, the groups must meet (in person or online) to conduct research and discuss their findings. It is recommended that areas of responsibility are divided among the group members to ensure a comprehensive approach.
4. Research Compilation: Once the research is done, the group should compile their findings into a structured presentation (it can be a slide show, infographic, poster, video, etc.).
5. Writing the Report: The group should prepare a formal report (with an introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography) summarizing their research and findings. This report will serve as the project's written document and should complement the presentation.

Project Deliverables

Each group will have two main project deliverables: a presentation and a written report.

1. The presentation should be visual, engaging, and informative. It should be planned to last 10 to 15 minutes and be presented to the whole class.
2. The written report should follow the following format:
   1. Introduction: The group should contextualize the topic, its relevance, real-world application, and the objective of the project.
   2. Development: The group should elaborate on the theory behind the project's central themes, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained.
   3. Conclusion: The group should conclude their work by restating their main points, explaining what they learned, and what conclusions they drew from the project.
   4. Bibliography: The group should list the sources they used to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

The deliverables are complementary: while the presentation offers a general and visual overview of the work done, the report provides a more detailed and in-depth view of the research and analysis carried out.
