Socialism, as a theoretical concept, seeks to build a classless society where the control of the means of production is not in the hands of a small portion of the population – the capitalists, but rather, is distributed equitably among its members. Based on this premise, socialism focuses on equality of rights and opportunities, aiming for collective well-being. To understand this concept, it is important to delve into classical authors such as Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, who are considered the founders of scientific socialism.

In the 20th century, socialism consolidated as a global political force, being implemented in various countries around the world. In Asia, socialism has played and still plays a crucial role in the formation of several countries, with emphasis on China and North Korea, which adopted their own socialist models, each according to their historical, cultural, and economic peculiarities.

Understanding how these states were established and operate, as well as the challenges and successes experienced by them, is essential to broaden our understanding of current world geopolitics. This project aims to provide a more detailed and critical view of socialism in Asia, through the investigation of its implementation, evolution, and impacts in the region.

Practical Activity: Simulating Asian Socialism

Activity Objectives

• Analyze and understand the implementation of socialism in selected Asian countries by the team (China, Vietnam, North Korea, etc.)
• Understand the differences and similarities in the implementation and results of socialism in different contexts
• Develop research, critical analysis, communication, and teamwork skills

Activity Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members. Each group will select an Asian country where socialism has played or plays an important role. The group will undergo a "sociocultural immersion" in that country, studying its history, politics, economy, and culture. They will particularly analyze the process of socialism implementation, its motivations, challenges, achievements, and impacts on the country.

Each group will create a "time capsule" containing items that represent the country's development under socialism. The items can be photos, news articles, interviews, academic papers, excerpts from books, videos, music, artworks, etc., that are relevant to the group's narrative about the country.

Required Materials

2. Materials for creating the time capsule (shoebox, photos, article prints, etc.)

Step by Step

1. Team division and country selection: teams will be formed, and each will select a country for study.

2. Research: groups will conduct in-depth research on their chosen country, focusing on the history of socialism in the region.

3. Creation of the "Time Capsule": the group will select and organize representative items of the country's evolution under socialism in the time capsule.

4. Report Preparation: using their research and the time capsule as a base, students will write a detailed report according to the provided guidelines.

5. Presentation: each group will make an oral presentation of their work to the class.

Project Deliverables

1. Time Capsule: should include attachments or copies of the items included in the capsule, with a brief description of each and the reason for their inclusion.

2. Written Report: should follow the suggested format (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, Bibliography). In the introduction, students should contextualize the selected country, explain why they chose specific items and what they represent. In the development, they should detail their research on socialism in their chosen country, discussing the sources and methodology used. The conclusions should highlight the main findings, reflections, and learnings of the group. The Bibliography should include all sources used.
