South: Economic Integration and its Biomes

Contextualization

The Southern Region of Brazil is known for its strong economic integration and diversity of biomes. This integration is directly linked to its geographical location, which places it in a strategic position for regional and international trade, and its variety of climate and soil, which result in diversified and productive agricultural production.

Its economy is strongly based on agriculture and industry, being one of the main producing and exporting centers of grains, meat and wines. However, the intense exploration of natural resources has been causing several impacts on its biomes, such as the loss of biodiversity, soil deterioration and pollution of watercourses.

Understanding this region, its biomes, the economy and the way of life of local populations, including indigenous communities, quilombolas and other traditional communities, is essential for the formation of conscious and critical citizens, capable of proposing sustainable solutions to the challenges the region faces.

Importance of Study

The study of the Southern Region goes far beyond the mere understanding of its physical and economic geography. Beyond that, this study allows us to understand how historical, social and economic processes influenced the formation of its biomes and the current configuration of its economy.

The analysis of productive chains and the associated economic and socio-environmental impacts of the exploitation of natural resources and agricultural activities, for example, are crucial for understanding the socioeconomic disparities and environmental problems of the region.

Thus, deepening knowledge about the Southern Region is an opportunity to enhance critical thinking and the ability to make informed decisions, skills increasingly valued in our society.

Practical Activity: Southern Region - Economy, Biomes and Impacts

Project Objectives:

The objective of this project is to carry out a detailed research on the economic integration of the Southern region of Brazil and its biomes, identifying the main socio-environmental impacts of this integration. Each team must, at the end, present a written report and a graphic presentation (which can be a poster, a slide presentation or even a video), which summarize the information researched and discuss the challenges and possible solutions for the sustainability of the region.

Detailed Project Description:

Part 1: Division of themes

Each group of 3 to 5 students will be responsible for a specific theme related to the Southern region of Brazil:

  • Group 1: Biomes of the Southern region: characteristics and biodiversity;
  • Group 2: Agricultural activities in the Southern region: characteristics and productive chains;
  • Group 3: Socio-environmental impacts of economic activities in the Southern region;
  • Group 4: Socioeconomic inequalities in the Southern region: employment, work and income;
  • Group 5: Culture and ways of life of local populations, including indigenous people, quilombolas and other traditional communities.

Part 2: Research and development of the report and graphic presentation

Groups should conduct detailed research on the topic assigned to them, using the sources suggested in the "Teaching Resources" section and other reliable sources they find. The result of this research should be presented in the format of a written report and a graphic presentation.

The report should include:

  • Introduction: It should contextualize the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: It should explain the theory behind the central theme(s) of the project, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used and, finally, present and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: It should conclude the work by restating its main points, explaining the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project.
  • Bibliography: It should indicate the sources used to work on the project.

The graphic presentation should summarize the main findings of the research in an attractive and clear way, using visual elements such as images, graphs and maps.

Required materials:

  • Computer with internet access
  • Text and presentation editing tools (Google Docs, PowerPoint, Canva, etc.)
  • Geography textbooks and teaching materials

Step by step:

  1. Division of themes among groups of students.
  2. Research on the assigned theme, delving into relevant concepts and gathering information from reliable sources.
  3. Compilation of information and writing of the report, following the indicated format.
  4. Creation of the graphic presentation, prioritizing clarity and visual attractiveness.
  5. Review of the material produced and preparation for the final presentation.

At the end of the project, each group should deliver the written report and the graphic presentation, which will be used for the evaluation of the work carried out.
