Context

What is nuclear energy?

Nuclear energy is the energy released during a nuclear reaction, more specifically during the splitting or merging of atomic nuclei. It is produced in nuclear power plants where a series of controlled reactions release a large amount of thermal energy. This thermal energy, in turn, is converted into electrical energy and used for various purposes. There are two main ways in which nuclear energy can be released: through nuclear fission (splitting a heavy atom into two or more smaller atoms) or nuclear fusion (combining two light nuclei to form a heavier nucleus).

Why study nuclear energy?

In the current era, the demand for a clean, safe, and efficient energy source is of paramount importance. Nuclear energy is one of those options that can provide a reliable and abundant energy supply, besides being less harmful to the environment when handled correctly. However, nuclear energy also has notable disadvantages, such as the danger of radiation and the issue of disposing of radioactive waste.

Relevance of nuclear energy

Nuclear energy plays a crucial role in today's world. Approximately 10% of the world's energy is generated from nuclear power plants. In addition to being a major source of electrical energy, nuclear energy is also used in various other applications, such as in medicine (for diagnosis and treatment of various diseases), industry (for the production of consumer goods), and scientific research.

On the other hand, nuclear energy is also associated with significant risks. Past nuclear accidents (such as Chernobyl and Fukushima) demonstrate the potential danger associated with nuclear energy. Furthermore, the radioactive waste produced by nuclear power plants is a serious problem that requires effective and safe solutions.

In the geographical context, understanding the distribution and use of nuclear energy around the world is extremely relevant. The location of nuclear power plants, the distribution of nuclear resources, and the energy policies of countries are important geographical issues that affect our daily lives and the future of our planet.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: World Nuclear Energy Map

Project Objective:

The objective of this activity is to allow students to investigate the global distribution of nuclear energy, using their research and geographical analysis skills, with a particular emphasis on collaborative work and communication.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 members and will be tasked with researching the distribution and use of nuclear energy in different countries around the world.

Each group will choose a continent and investigate the following topics related to nuclear energy on that continent:

  1. How many countries on this continent have nuclear power plants and where are they located?
  2. What are the main nuclear energy-producing countries on this continent?
  3. What are the main energy policies of these countries regarding nuclear energy?
  4. Are there significant debates or controversies regarding nuclear energy in these countries?
  5. How does the use of nuclear energy in these countries affect the environment and society?

The final result will be a map of the chosen continent, marking the location of nuclear power plants and presenting an analysis of the above points.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for research.
  • Materials for creating maps. It can be digital (using map software like Google Earth or MapChart) or physical (paper, pencils, markers, etc.).

Step by Step:

  1. Each group selects a continent.
  2. The groups conduct online research to collect data on the use of nuclear energy in their chosen continent.
  3. The groups analyze the collected data and formulate responses to the research topics.
  4. The groups create a map of the chosen continent, marking the location of nuclear power plants and incorporating their analyses.
  5. Finally, each group must prepare a 15-minute oral presentation to share their findings with the class, along with the display of the map.

The total duration of the project should be about a month. The research, analysis, and map creation phases should take five to ten hours per student.

Project Deliverables and Activity Connections:

In addition to the physical or digital map, each group must submit a written report. This report should follow the format of an academic report with the following main topics:

  1. Introduction: Here, students should briefly introduce nuclear energy, its relevance in the current world, the project objectives, and the continent chosen for research.
  2. Development: In this section, students should present the information they collected during their research, including quantitative data, qualitative analysis, and geographical information. They should also discuss the map creation process and justify the choices made.
  3. Conclusion: Students should conclude the report by summarizing the main results, discussing what they learned, and their conclusions about nuclear energy on the chosen continent.
  4. Bibliography: Finally, students should list all the resources they used for their research.

When writing the document, students should complement the information presented on the map in order to create a cohesive, coherent, and comprehensive work.
