Imperialism: Asia

Contextualization

Imperialism in Asia was a defining period in modern history, both for the countries that exerted colonial power and for the nations that were colonized. This period of European and North American expansion and occupation had a significant impact on the formation of Asian societies, economy, politics, and culture, effects that are still felt today.

During the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century, powers such as England, France, the United States, Germany, the Netherlands, Russia, and Japan sought to expand their geopolitical and economic dominance, establishing political and economic control over vast areas of the Asian continent.

The intense imperialist race, driven by the metropolises' desire to gain control over valuable natural resources, markets, and trade routes, resulted in direct and indirect conflicts between colonial powers, drastically altering the world's geopolitical map.

However, local peoples resisted foreign occupation in various ways. In these territories, various struggles for independence and revolutions took place, eventually resulting in the end of colonial rule in most of the Asian continent during the 20th century.

Understanding this period and its consequences is crucial to grasp not only the history of the Asian continent but also the power dynamics and conflicts that shaped the modern world. Analyzing Imperialism in Asia is also examining the roots of contemporary conflicts, discussing concepts of ethnocentrism, racism, and modernity, and understanding how the global distribution of power and wealth was historically constructed.

Activity Title: 'Analyzing Asian Imperialism: A Board Game'

Project Objective:

The project's objective is to create an educational board game that represents and discusses the primary concepts and events of Imperialism in Asia. The game will promote cooperation within the group, encourage critical and strategic thinking, and reinforce understanding of Asian history during imperialism.

Detailed Project Description:

Required Materials:

  • Cardboard or thick paper for the game board base
  • Colored paper, colored pencils, pens, markers for the artwork of cards and board
  • Access to a computer for research and development of game rules
  • Small objects or pieces from old games to be used as game pieces

Step-by-step detailed activity execution:

  1. Gather in groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Each group should thoroughly research imperialism in Asia covering the following topics: involved imperialist countries, colonized Asian countries, exploited natural resources, conflicts resulting from colonialism, forms of resistance from local peoples, and the legacy of imperialism.
  3. Based on the research, groups should create a board game that represents the dynamics of imperialism in Asia.
  4. The board should contain spaces representing the colonized Asian countries. Each space should have information related to the country such as the natural resources present and the imperialist power that colonized it.
  5. Groups should create event cards representing historical events during the Asian imperialism period. These cards should influence the game progress, such as conflict cards causing a loss of resources or resistance cards providing an opportunity for players to reconquer territories.
  6. Establish clear rules for the game that represent the logic of imperialism, power struggles among imperialist powers, and resistance from colonized peoples.
  7. The design of the board and cards should be visually appealing and informative.
  8. Test the game and adjust the rules and design as necessary.

Project Deliverables:

  1. Complete board game: Includes the board, event cards, and game rules. The game should be delivered in a physical format.
  2. Written Document: After developing and testing the game, students should write a report, at least 10 pages long, containing the following topics:
    • Introduction: Provide a contextualization of the imperialism in Asia theme, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective.
    • Development: Detailed discussion on the main concepts and events of imperialism in Asia that were incorporated into the game. Explanation of the game creation process, the methodology used, how each game element (board, cards, and rules) corresponds to imperialism dynamics, and a discussion on the game test results.
    • Conclusion: Project conclusion summarizing the main points, reflecting on the learning outcomes, and drawing conclusions about the project.
    • Bibliography: Indication of all sources used for research and project development.

Remember, this project not only assesses your knowledge on the subject but also your communication skills, time management, problem-solving, and creativity. This is an opportunity for you to delve into the content, develop valuable skills, and have fun!
