Unifications in Europe: Italy and Germany

Contextualization

Introduction

The Italian and German Unifications were two central historical processes in the formation of contemporary Europe. Both took place in the 19th century and involved the merging of several independent states into a single nation. The Italian Unification (or Risorgimento) occurred between 1815 and 1871, while the German Unification took place between 1862 and 1871. These events not only shaped the political and geographical structure of Europe, but also encouraged the rise of nationalism and patriotic sentiments.

The Italian Unification was a revolutionary and complex process that required the collaboration of political and military leadership. Civil rebellions, wars with other countries, and the intervention of the Pope were factors that had a great influence on this historical process. On the other hand, the German Unification was primarily a political and military process. Led by Prussia under the guidance of Otto von Bismarck, the process required a lot of political maneuvering and strategy to overcome the obstacles posed by the various small kingdoms, duchies, and independent city-states that composed the region.

Contextualization

The Italian and German Unifications were phenomena that altered the status quo in 19th-century Europe. They culminated in the creation of two of the most powerful European nations we know today - Italy and Germany. These unification processes also defined the borders and established the cultural identity for the citizens of these nations. Furthermore, these processes had significant implications throughout the European continent and beyond, from political to economic spheres.

Understanding these unification processes is essential to comprehend the evolution of European and global politics, the conflicts and alliances that shaped the modern world. It also helps us understand the cultural and social influences that shape the identity of the German and Italian peoples. Moreover, understanding the role of leaders in the unification processes provides important lessons on leadership, strategy, and negotiation.

Practical Activity: Modeling the Italian and German Unification

Project Objective

This project aims to stimulate students' understanding of the Italian and German Unification processes, emphasizing the historical, political, and social factors that contributed to these events.

Students, in groups of 3 to 5, should prepare a presentation simulating the Italian and German unification processes, representing the main events, historical figures, and challenges they faced. After the presentation, the group should write a detailed report on the activity.

Project Description

Groups should divide their time between research and project preparation. They should research each stage of the unification processes, identify the main characters and their roles, and deeply understand the obstacles faced and how they were overcome.

Based on this research, groups should prepare a presentation, using materials of their choice, simulating the unification processes. Each group member should represent a key character in the unification process.

After the presentation, the group should jointly write a report detailing the activity, contextualizing the unification events in historical, political, and social aspects. The discussions held by the group during the research should be properly recorded and presented in this report.

Required Materials

  • History books, websites, and documentaries for research;
  • Materials for presentation preparation, such as cardboard, colored pens, or digital tools like PowerPoint, for example.

Step by Step

  1. Research: Divide the stages of the unification processes among group members for research. Each member should identify key characters, understand their roles, and the challenges they faced.

  2. Preparation: Gather to discuss the research results. Define who will represent each character in the presentation. Start preparing the presentation, deciding how the unification stages will be represented.

  3. Rehearsal: Conduct rehearsals of the presentation, ensuring all group members understand their roles.

  4. Presentation: Deliver the presentation to the class. Group members should briefly explain each of the represented stages and, in the end, be open to questions from classmates and the teacher.

  5. Report: After the presentation, start writing the report. It should be structured into four sections: introduction, development, conclusions, and bibliography used. The introduction should present the topic, its relevance and real-world application, and the project's objective. The development should explain the theory behind the project's central themes, detail the activity, indicate the methodology used, and finally present and discuss the results obtained. The conclusion should summarize the main points, explain the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project. The bibliography should indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Project Submission

The team must submit a video file of the presentation and a written document containing the project report. The presentation should clearly demonstrate the representation of the unification process stages, the characters, and the challenges faced. The report should be well-structured, clear, with coherent and convincing arguments, and should demonstrate the team's understanding of the Italian and German unification events.
