“Latin America is a region of the world rich in culture, history, and diversity. Among the most significant historical events that shaped the face of the region are the wars of independence that occurred in the early 19th century. The independence of Latin American countries was the result of a complex series of political, economic, and social events that shook the colonial structures and shaped Latin America as we know it today.”

The independence of the Latin American nations did not occur in isolation. They influenced and were influenced by each other, and also reflected the effects of significant events that occurred in other parts of the globe, such as the French Revolution and the independence of the United States. They were also the result of internal conflicts and tensions, between the colonizers and the native populations, and between local elites and the underprivileged population.

This project will provide an in-depth study of these events and their implications, examining the causes and consequences of independence. This study will not only provide a deeper understanding of Latin American history, but will also help to understand the current political, economic, and social scenarios in the region.

The independence of the Latin American nations is a theme that allows us to reflect on the intersection of various historical phenomena – colonization, imperialism, indigenous resistance, bourgeois revolutions, among others. For this reason, not only is it historically relevant, but it is also a key to understanding the processes of formation of territories and identities, as well as to questioning concepts such as nation and freedom.

Practical activity

Title of the activity: "Recreating Independence"

Project objective

The main objective of this project is to understand the processes that led to the independence of different Latin American countries and the impacts of these movements on the current political, economic, and social configuration of these nations.

Description

Each group will be responsible for deeply studying the independence of a specific Latin American country (Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Chile, etc.). They should research the historical context in which independence occurred, the protagonists of this movement, the external influences, the consequences, and how it is viewed by the inhabitants of this country today.

Based on this study, students will have to produce:

1. A Concept Map: that presents in an organized and visual way the main concepts, events, and characters of the independence of the country studied.

2. A theatrical play: students should recreate a fictional dialogue between the main characters of the independence of the country studied, to be presented live to the class, this dialogue should be based on the research carried out. For better visualization, students can use resources such as costumes and scenery.

Necessary materials

1. Research materials: books, internet access, documentaries, etc.
2. Materials for building the concept map: paper, colored pens, post-its, etc.
3. Materials for the presentation of the play: characteristic costumes, scenery, etc.

Step by step

1. Group formation and selection of the country that they will study.
2. Beginning of the research on the independence of the chosen country: events, characters, causes, consequences, etc.
3. Elaboration of the Concept Map: with the results of the research, the students should organize the information into a concept map.
4. Writing the script for the theatrical play: students should create a script that portrays a fictional dialogue between the main characters of the country's independence.
5. Rehearsal and presentation of the theatrical play: students should rehearse and then present the play to the class.
6. Writing of the final report: with the research experience, elaboration of the concept map, and presentation of the play, the students will write a report that gives an account of the entire process, the group's learning, and their conclusions on the topic.

Remember: In the introduction of the report, contextualize the topic, its relevance, and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project. In the development, explain the activity in detail, the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. In the conclusion, highlight the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn about the project. And finally, indicate the sources of information that you used for the work in a Bibliography.

Attention to respect and collaboration in interactions with colleagues throughout the process, organization and planning of tasks within the established deadline, proactivity and creativity to search for and present information in a clear and interesting way.

The duration of the project is one week and it should be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students.
