Hands-on Activity: “Revolutionizing Independence in Latin America”

Project Goal

In this project, students will create a multimedia presentation, which can take the form of a short film, a filmed play, a podcast, or an animated slide show, that portrays the events and factors that contributed to the independence of a Latin American country of their choice. The project will allow students to explore Latin American history in depth and to understand how external events such as the French Revolution and the independence of the United States influenced these independence movements.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people, and each group must choose a Latin American country to focus on. They must conduct thorough research about the history of their chosen country’s independence, considering questions such as:

• What were the internal and external forces that influenced the independence movement?
• How did the ideas of the French Revolution and the independence of the United States influence the independence movement?
• What were the consequences of independence for the country?

Students should then use this information to create a multimedia presentation to share their findings. They should consider using different types of media, such as images, text, audio, and video, to make their presentation more engaging.

• Multimedia creation equipment (camera, microphone, editing software, etc.)

Step-by-Step

1. Form groups and select the country of study.
2. Conduct research on the chosen country's independence.
3. Create a script or storyboard for the multimedia presentation.
4. Meet to discuss and finalize script/storyboard.
5. Produce the multimedia presentation.
6. Review and refine the presentation.
7. Final presentation.

Once the hands-on portion is completed, each group will need to write a report about the project which should contain the following:

1. Introduction: Frame the country chosen and its independence period. Explain why the group selected this country and the value of studying its independence.
2. Development: Describe the rationale behind the chosen country's independence and explain in detail the multimedia presentation. State the methodology employed while researching and producing the presentation. Present and discuss the results obtained.
3. Conclusion: Summarize the main points of your work, making explicit what was learned and any conclusions drawn from the project.
4. Bibliography: List all sources used in your research and production of the project. Remember to cite any sources for videos, images, music, texts and other materials consulted.

The reports will assess students’ understanding of the topics studied, their ability to work in teams, and their capacity to translate the information learned into an engaging and creative presentation format.
