Context

In this project, we will delve into one of the most exciting and intriguing periods in recent history: the Cold War and the phase of peaceful coexistence in the 1950s and 1960s, with special emphasis on the conflicts in Vietnam and the emerging social movements of the time.

The Cold War was a period of great global tension between the two world superpowers of the time, the United States and the Soviet Union, which occurred shortly after World War II. This period was marked by an almost constant state of 'peaceful coexistence,' a phase in which both superpowers sought to coexist without resorting directly to war.

However, peaceful coexistence did not indicate that everything was peaceful. Far from it, this period saw a series of indirect conflicts, known as proxy wars, between the two superpowers. Notably, these proxy wars took place in locations such as Vietnam, making the country a symbol of the struggle between communism and capitalism.

Why is it important?

The social movements of the time were also impacted by the Cold War. The climate of tension and fear created fertile ground for protests and social movements, which saw the need for social change, civil rights, and political reforms. The intertwining of the Cold War, peaceful coexistence, conflicts in Vietnam, and social movements presents a fascinating view of how politics and society can mutually influence each other.

This period of history is of crucial importance for us to understand current geopolitical tensions. Many of the political frontlines and conflicts we see today have their roots in this period, and therefore, it is essential to know it.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Simulation of the Cold War Summit

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with a deeper and more practical insight into the tensions, negotiations, and strategies of the Cold War, focusing on the period of peaceful coexistence, conflicts in Vietnam, and social movements. Additionally, the project aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as teamwork, communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and time management.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5, and each group will represent a global force during the Cold War (USA, USSR, China, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, social movements). They will recreate a series of simulated meetings, discussing and negotiating solutions to the conflicts of the period.

The groups will have a week to prepare for the meetings, researching their role, the policies of the time, the key actors involved, the key events, and developing negotiation strategies. Then, there will be a series of summit meetings where the groups will discuss and negotiate key issues.

Required Materials

• Books, articles, and reliable internet sources for research.
• Paper and pens for notes and planning.
• Adequate space for the summit meeting (can be at school or online).

Step by Step

1. Divide the class into groups and assign each one the role of a global force from the Cold War period.
2. Provide general guidance on the historical period and suggest research sources.
3. The groups will spend the week preparing: researching their role, identifying their main interests and objectives, understanding the conflicts and tensions, and developing a negotiation strategy.
4. Conduct simulated summit meetings, where each group will present their positions, debate issues, and negotiate solutions. These meetings can be recorded for later evaluation purposes.
5. Students will reflect on the experience and write a report on the project.

Deliverables

• Effective participation in the simulated meetings.

• Research report and group negotiation strategy to be submitted before the summit meetings.

• Final report describing the learning experience. The report should include the following items:

  • Introduction: Contextualize the theme, its relevance and real-world application, as well as the objective of the simulation.
  • Development: Describe the theory studied and how it was applied in the simulation, explain the activity in detail, indicate the methodology used, and discuss the results obtained.
  • Conclusion: Conclude the work by summarizing its main points, explaining the learnings obtained, and drawing conclusions about the simulation.
  • Bibliography: Indicate the sources they relied on to work on the project such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

Students will be evaluated based on the quality of their research, their negotiation and communication skills, and the depth and reflection of their reports.
