The binomial experiment itself is characterized by being repeatable, where each repetition can lead to success with the same probability.

The binomial distribution can be used to model events that are binary in nature, meaning an event can either happen or not. Thus, it becomes extremely useful in a wide variety of applications, from modeling the outcome of gambling games to calculating risk in investments.

Project Objective:

The activity aims to engage students in the practical application of binomial probability theory, using it to investigate a real and relevant phenomenon of their choice, whose results can be binary (e.g., success or failure, hit or miss, etc.).

Additionally, this work also aims to develop socio-emotional skills such as time management, effective communication, problem-solving, creative thinking, and proactivity.

Detailed Project Description:

Students should form groups of 3 to 5 people and choose a real-world phenomenon that fits the characteristics of a binomial experiment. In other words, the chosen event must be binomial; it either occurs or not. The groups should then plan and conduct an experiment, collect and analyze the data, and apply binomial probability theory to understand and explain the observed behavior.

Required Materials:

Depending on the chosen experiment, various materials may be required. Computers with internet access and data processing programs such as Excel, Google Sheets, or statistical software (R, Python, SPSS, etc.) will certainly be necessary. Each group should list the materials needed for their specific experiment in the final report.

Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

  1. Group Formation: This step is simple and straightforward. Students should divide into groups of 3 to 5 people.

  2. Selection of the Phenomenon to be Investigated: Once the groups are formed, they should identify a real-world phenomenon that fits the characteristics of a binomial experiment.

  3. Experiment Planning: In this stage, the group should plan how to conduct the experiment, identifying the necessary resources, how the data will be collected, etc.

  4. Experiment Execution: The group should then carry out the experiment as planned, carefully recording the results.

  5. Data Analysis: The next step is the analysis of the collected data. Here, the group should apply the concepts of binomial probability to interpret the results of the experiment.

  6. Report Elaboration: Finally, the group should prepare a detailed report documenting the entire process: from the choice of the phenomenon, through the experiment planning, data collection and analysis, to the final conclusions.

  2. Development: Here, you should explain the theory behind the project's central theme. Explain the activity, detail the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained. Make sure your explanation of the experiment planning, data collection, and data analysis is clear and detailed.

  3. Conclusions: Summarize the main points, present the learnings obtained, and the conclusions drawn about the project. This section should answer the following question: What conclusions can be drawn based on the analysis of the collected data?

  4. Bibliography: List the sources that supported the work on the project, such as books, web pages, videos, etc.

  • Any other product necessary for understanding the experiment, such as code, data spreadsheets, photos, videos, etc.
