The study of combinations is an important topic in Mathematics and has various practical applications, especially in the fields of science, business, and technology. Although it is a relatively simple concept - a combination is a way of selecting items from a larger group where the order of selection does not matter - the depth of its possible applications is vast.

In theoretical terms, combinations are a fundamental part of the discipline of combinatorics, which studies the counting, organization, and combination of objects. But don't be mistaken, combinations are not just 'counts'. They have profound implications in statistics, information theory, and even in quantum physics.

Combinations allow us to calculate how many possibilities exist without having to list them all. Imagine having to calculate how many different committees can be formed in a congress with dozens of members? Or how many combinations of ingredients you could make on a pizza with various available flavors? Combination is the tool that allows us to answer these questions.

Moreover, combinations are extremely useful in other areas of exact sciences and social sciences. For example, in biology, combination is crucial for understanding genetic diversity. In computer science, combinations are used in cryptography and graph theory. In economics, combinations can be used to calculate possible economic scenarios.

In school, combination may seem like an abstract and difficult topic to understand, but with this project, we hope you can see the theory of combinations from a new perspective and see its many useful applications in the real world.

Practical Activity

Title: "CombiPizza - Unveiling the World of Combinations"

Project Objective

Explore the concept of combinations in a fun and practical way, applying it to the creation of varied pizzas. By the end of the project, students should be able to understand and calculate combinations independently and contextualize them in the real world.

Project Description

In this activity, groups will have to manage a "virtual pizzeria". Their challenge will be to create as many varieties of pizzas as possible, considering a fixed set of ingredients.

Ten different ingredients will be provided, and the rule is that each pizza must contain at least 2 and at most 5 ingredients.

Groups should calculate the number of possible combinations and, in addition, describe the combinations of ingredients they consider most attractive.

We will demonstrate the application of the combination formula, as well as stimulate creativity in assembling the pizzas and teamwork in deciding which combinations would be the tastiest.

Project Duration

The project is planned to be developed over two weeks, requiring about 12 hours of work from each student. Each team should be composed of 3 to 5 students.

Necessary Materials

  • List of ingredients (provided by the teacher)
  • Calculator
  • Paper and pen for notes
  • Internet access for research

Project Step-by-Step

  1. Form groups of 3 to 5 students.

  2. Theoretical explanation by the teacher about the concept of combination (using resources such as recommended books and videos).

  3. Presentation of the "virtual pizzeria" challenge.

  4. Each group should list all possible pizza combinations with the available ingredients.

  5. The teams should select and describe the 10 combinations they consider most appetizing. Here, students should argue and defend their choices, stimulating communication and negotiation within the group.

  6. Students will calculate the total number of possible combinations for the available set of ingredients using the combination formula.

  7. Finally, each team should prepare a detailed report of the activity.

Project Delivery and Written Document

The work will culminate with the delivery of a written report, with a formal structure, which should contain:

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of the problem and its objective. Here, the student should mention the concept of combination and its importance.

  2. Development: In this section, students should describe the activity carried out step by step, explain the combination formula and how it was applied in the practical activity. They should also present and discuss the results obtained. This segment should also discuss the activity methodology, presenting the group's strategy for assembling the pizzas and the decision-making process about the most pleasant combinations.

  3. Conclusions: Students should address the main points of the work, what they learned from the project, and what conclusions were drawn. The team should also comment on the teamwork process, how time was managed, and if any challenges had to be overcome.
