Theoretical Introduction

Probability is a branch of Mathematics that studies uncertainties, that is, phenomena that cannot be predicted with precision. It seeks to determine the frequency at which equalities or inequalities can occur in random experiments. Associated with probability is the concept of Sample Space, which is the set of all possible outcomes of an experiment. The sample space can be discrete or continuous, the former being a finite or countable set of possible outcomes (such as flipping a coin) and the latter an interval of real numbers (such as measuring a person's height).

Segmenting the sample space to study a specific event of Probability is done through Events, which consist of subsets of the sample space. There are simple events, which contain a single outcome, and compound events, which contain more than one outcome. Finally, Equally Likely Events are those that have the same chance of occurring, meaning the probability of each is equal.

In this project, you will explore these key concepts through a practical experiment, based on simulations and data collection. Additionally, you will perform statistical analyses of the results obtained, linking Mathematics to another discipline, Statistics.

Contextualization

In the real world, probability and sample spaces are used in various areas such as Engineering, Physics, Economics, Medicine, among others. Understanding these concepts is crucial to comprehend the uncertainties that surround us and make the best possible decisions.

For example, to predict the weather, meteorologists use probabilistic models that take into account possible outcomes (sunny, cloudy, rainy, etc.), each with its respective probability. In the financial sector, analysts use probability tools to estimate the likelihood of an investment succeeding or failing. Probability is also the basis of statistical inference, used in research, sciences, and even on social media to understand and predict behaviors.

The topics of Probability and Sample Space may seem challenging initially, but you will realize how they are present in our daily lives and their importance for various fields of knowledge.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Darts Game: An Exploration of Probability and Sample Space"

Project Objective

To put into practice the theoretical concepts of Probability and Sample Space by exploring the possibilities of a darts game. Apply statistical techniques to analyze the results obtained and relate the theoretical concepts to the experiment.

Detailed Project Description

Each group of 3 to 5 students will design and conduct an experiment using a dart game. The sample space will be represented by a target divided into areas (or sectors), each corresponding to different scores.

Events will be represented by dart throws, which will be recorded and analyzed. The group will also investigate equally likely events (such as hitting or missing the target) and perform probability calculations based on their results.

Additionally, the group should also record and statistically analyze the results, including the preparation of graphs and tables for visualization.

Required Materials

  1. Dart game: target and safety darts.
  2. Paper and pen for notes.
  3. Camera or cell phone to record the experiment.
  4. Computer with appropriate software for data processing (such as Excel, Google Sheets, or other statistical analysis software).

Step-by-Step Guide for Activity Execution

  1. Study the concepts of Probability, sample space, events, and equally likely events.
  2. Define the sample space of the dart game, identifying the possible outcomes.
  3. Design and conduct the experiment: throw darts at the target and record the results.
  4. Gather the results, counting how many times each result was achieved.
  5. Calculate the probabilities of each result and investigate if any event is equally likely.
  6. Perform a statistical analysis of the results, generating tables and graphs.
  7. Relate the theory studied to the practice of the experiment.
