Through tables, we can organize a large volume of data in a structured and functional way. The use of graphs, in turn, allows for quick and intuitive visualization of patterns that may be hidden when looking directly at the raw data.
The correct interpretation of graphs and charts is a skill that goes beyond the school environment. In our daily lives, we are constantly bombarded with information that is often presented in the form of graphs and charts. Whether in a news story about the unemployment rate, in the disclosure of opinion polls, or in monitoring the performance of a stock on the stock exchange, understanding what these representations mean is essential to understanding the world around us.
Moreover, in times of big data and data-driven decisions, this skill becomes a crucial component in preparing for the job market, where decision-making can be based on the analysis of data represented by graphs and charts.

Practical Activity
Activity Title: Deciphering Graphs and Charts
Project Objective
Through local or national newspapers, each group should collect a series of graphs and charts that portray statistical data from different social, economic, political, etc. contexts. Students should analyze, interpret and contextualize these materials, construct arguments from them and, finally, prepare a detailed report on what was learned.
Detailed Project Description
Each group of 3 to 5 students should collect at least 10 graphs and/or charts from local or national newspapers or magazines, portraying information from different contexts (economic, political, social, etc.). These materials will be the basis for student analysis and interpretation.
Students should interpret each graph and/or chart, presenting their conclusions about what the data shows and finding possible relationships between the different pieces of information (if any). During this process, students should discuss how the numbers are calculated, reflect on possible inadequacies or errors and, finally, construct arguments that support their interpretations.
Materials Needed
- Local or national newspapers and magazines
- Pencils and paper (or computer with text editing software) for writing the analyses
Step-by-Step Guide
- Collect 10 graphs and/or charts from newspapers or magazines.
- Analyze each graph or chart, identifying the data source, topic, sample and scale used.
- Interpret what the data is showing, identifying patterns, trends, comparisons, relationships between variables, etc.
- Discuss and reflect on the processes for calculating these numbers.
- Identify possible inadequacies or errors that may lead to misinterpretation.
- Construct arguments that support the interpretations made.
- Write detailed analyses for each graph or chart collected.
- Compile all the analyses into a detailed report, which will be presented to the teacher.
Project Submission
The final product of the work will be a report containing, in addition to the analysis of the graphs and charts, four main topics:
- Introduction: explaining the topic, its relevance and application in the real world and the objective of the project.
- Development: explaining the theory behind the interpretation of graphs and charts, the activity carried out, the methodology used and the presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
- Conclusions: summarizing the main points of the work, the lessons learned and the conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography: indicating the sources used to work on the project.
This report must be submitted within one week of the start of the activities.
