Context

Mathematics is an essential tool in various areas of our lives, including fashion. The ability to use mathematical techniques to analyze fashion trends, predict sales, and calculate costs is highly valued in the fashion industry.

A specific area of mathematics that we find in fashion is statistics, especially measures of central tendency (mean, mode, and median) and measures of dispersion (range, variance, and standard deviation). These are essential tools for interpreting a variety of data, from consumer preferences to the production costs of fashion items.

Fashion is a multi-billion-dollar industry worldwide. It is one of the ways people use to express themselves and build their identity. It is no wonder that it is an economically important activity, with a complexity that extends from design to logistics. Fashion, although often seen as a universe of its own, has many intersections with other areas of knowledge, including mathematics.

In this sense, the study of fashion and its trends can provide us with a rich and interesting context for the application of mathematics. Whether in interpreting sales data, optimizing production processes, or predicting trends based on previous patterns, mathematics plays a crucial role in the fashion industry.

Project Objective

Students will apply and improve their technical skills by analyzing a fictional dataset from a very popular clothing store in their city. With this, they will calculate and interpret different measures of central tendency (mode, median, and mean) and measures of dispersion (range, variance, and standard deviation). By doing this, they will understand how these mathematical concepts can be used in the fashion industry.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will receive a fictional dataset containing information such as type of clothing, price, number of sales, customer reviews, etc. Each student should dedicate between two to four hours to analyze the data.

Necessary Materials

  • A fictional dataset from a fashion store.
  • Access to a computer with spreadsheet software (Excel, Google Sheets, etc.) for data analysis.

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide to Perform the Activity

  1. Understanding the dataset: The first step is to understand the provided dataset. What types of information are present? How can they be categorized?

  2. Calculating measures of central tendency: You need to calculate the mode, median, and mean of each category in the dataset. You can do this manually or use a spreadsheet tool.

  3. Calculating measures of dispersion: Next, calculate the range, variance, and standard deviation for each category. This will provide information about the variability of the data.

  4. Analysis and interpretation of results: Based on the calculations performed, what do the data suggest about the store? Which items are the best sellers (mode)? What is the average price of items? How varied are the prices of items (variance)? These and other questions should be discussed, and their significance for the business should be understood.

At the end of the project, students should write a detailed report containing the following elements:

  1. Introduction: In this section, contextualize the project and explain why it is relevant to understand how mathematics is used in the fashion industry. Explain the project's objective and how it will be carried out.

  2. Development: Here, students should present the theory behind measures of central tendency and dispersion. They should explain how these measures were calculated and what results were obtained. This section should be very specific, including tables, graphs, and figures whenever possible.

  3. Conclusions: In this section, summarize the main points of the work, explain the learnings obtained, and draw conclusions about the project.
