Theoretical Introduction

Mathematics, as we know it, is the universal language for understanding and explaining complex phenomena. In particular, one of its branches, Statistics, deals with the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation and presentation of data. And believe it, our life is full of data! This leads us to the need to learn how to deal with this data efficiently and effectively. One of the most visual and efficient ways to interpret data is through charts and tables.

Charts and tables are visual tools that help us to understand complex information. For example, graphic representation highlights behaviors that would not be as visible in a value table, and assists us in interpreting and making decisions based on this data. There are different types of charts and each of them is best suited to certain types of data or situations. Some examples are: bar charts, line charts, sector charts (or "pie charts"), histograms, boxplots, among others.

But how do you know what type of chart or table to use? How to interpret them? These are some of the questions we will explore in this project. We will deepen our understanding of different types of charts and tables, understand when to use them, and develop skills to interpret them efficiently.

Contextualization

In the modern world, we are constantly surrounded by data. These are statistics on health, economy, education, sports, among many others. Charts and tables are everywhere: in newspapers, on television, on the internet and also in our classes. They are a powerful communication tool because they allow us to visualize large amounts of data in a comprehensive and conclusive way.

More than ever, with the exponential increase in the amount of data available, knowing how to interpret charts and tables has become a fundamental skill. Not only for academic life, but for life in general. Whether it is to understand a performance report at school, to follow the evolution of a pandemic in daily updated charts, or to analyze the performance of a soccer team through statistics. All of this requires us to know how to read and interpret charts and tables.

To deepen your knowledge in charts and tables, I recommend the following resources:

  1. Book: "Basic Statistics" by Pedro A. Morettin and Wilton O. Bussab. This book addresses, in depth, concepts of statistics, including the representation of data through charts and tables.
  2. Khan Academy: An online platform with educational videos and interactive exercises on various topics, including statistics and charts.
  3. Portal da Matemática OBMEP: A complete lesson on Charts and Tables from the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools.
  4. GeoGebra: Interactive online tool for creating and interpreting charts.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "Venturing into the World of Data: Creating and Interpreting Charts and Tables"

Project Objective

To expand knowledge on charts and tables, developing skills for creating and interpreting different types of graphical representations. In addition, it is intended to stimulate teamwork, communication and the ability to research and analyze statistical data.

Project Description

Students will be divided into teams of 3 to 5 members. Each team must research, select and collect data on a topic of common interest that covers two distinct disciplines, which could be, for example, the relationship between the number of inhabitants and the illiteracy rate of different countries (disciplines involved: Geography and Sociology).

The groups must organize the collected data into tables and represent them graphically using at least four different types of charts (histogram, bar chart, line chart, sector chart, box-plot, scatter chart, among others). The teams must analyze the data represented in the charts and interpret the results obtained.

The project will be delivered in two formats:

  1. A written report, containing: Introduction, Development (theoretical explanation, description of the activity, methodology and discussion of the results), Conclusions and Bibliography.
  2. An oral presentation of the project to the class.

Necessary Materials

  • Computer with internet access to research data and develop the project.
  • Programs to create charts (could be Excel, GeoGebra, Google Sheets, among others).
  • Materials for the construction of the report; it can be done in a Word document, Google Docs or another of the group's preference.
  • Materials for the presentation (slides, posters, among others).

Step by Step

  1. Division of students into groups and choice of topic for data collection.

  2. Research, collect and organize the data in a table.

  3. Create the graphical representation of the data using at least four different types of charts.

  4. Interpret and analyze the data represented in the charts.

  5. Write the project report, explaining the theory of charts and tables (Types of charts and their applications), the methodology used for data collection, the creation of the charts, and discussion of the results. It is recommended to divide this task among the team members to highlight the teamwork.

  6. Prepare an oral presentation of the project for the class, demonstrating the collected data, the charts created and the conclusions of the analysis. Again, all team members should actively participate in the presentation.

  7. Present the project to the class.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, the groups must deliver the written report containing the introduction, the development, the conclusions and the bibliography used. The report should demonstrate the understanding of the topic and the ability to interpret data and charts.

In addition, each team must make a presentation to the class, explaining the project execution process, showing the charts created and sharing the conclusions obtained. All team members must participate in the presentation.

Remember, the quality of the report and the presentation, the complexity of the data analyzed, the creativity in the presentation of the results, the clarity in the exposition of ideas and the active participation of all team members will be criteria considered in the evaluation of the work.
