Steroids and Anabolics

Contextualization

Anabolic steroids, or simply anabolics, are substances mainly used to enhance physical performance. They are derived from testosterone, a natural hormone produced in the testicles of men, the ovaries of women, and by the adrenal glands of both sexes. Testosterone is responsible for the development of secondary sexual characteristics in men and women and plays an important role in increasing muscle mass.

Anabolic steroids have been primarily used by athletes and bodybuilders to increase strength and muscle mass. However, the use of anabolic steroids can have many side effects and health risks, including liver damage, heart problems, mood and behavior changes, and decreased fertility. Furthermore, the use of anabolic steroids without a medical prescription is illegal.

Importance of the Theme

The use of anabolic steroids is a very relevant topic for young people, especially those who engage in physical activity or are considering starting. With the increasing pressure to have a perfect body and the desire to improve sports performance, many young people may be tempted to use anabolic steroids. However, it is important that they understand the risks associated with these substances and know that there are healthy and legal alternatives to enhance physical performance.

Physical education is a discipline that has the responsibility to promote the health and well-being of students. Therefore, it is essential that students learn about the effects of anabolic steroids and understand the risks associated with their use. This project aims to provide students with a clear and comprehensive understanding of the effects of anabolic steroids on the human body and health in general.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Anabolic Steroids and Their Impacts: An Informed Debate

This activity will involve research, creating presentations, and debates to promote understanding and discussion about the effects and risks of anabolic steroids.

Project Objective

The objective is to raise awareness among students about the dangers of anabolic steroids, encouraging research, teamwork, and organizing ideas through presentations and debates.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be divided into small groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will be responsible for researching an aspect of anabolic steroids (for example, medical use, sports use, effects on the body, legislation and legal implications, etc.). The groups should prepare a 15-minute presentation on the assigned topic and be prepared to debate their findings and viewpoints with the other groups.

Required Materials

  1. Internet access for research
  2. Presentation software (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc.)
  3. Whiteboard or flipchart for notes during the debate
  4. Paper and pens for notes

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Divide the class into groups of 3 to 5 students.
  2. Assign each group a specific aspect of anabolic steroids to research.
  3. Instruct the groups to research their topic, highlighting the impact on health, society, sports, and the real-life importance of the subject.
  4. The groups should prepare a 15-minute presentation describing their findings, which should be interesting and engaging. The presentation should be organized to allow a clear understanding of the topic.
  5. After all presentations, start a debate where each group will defend their viewpoints.
  6. Throughout the debate, students can ask each other questions and discuss the differences in their viewpoints.

Project Delivery: The groups must submit a written document, which will include the following points:

Introduction: Summary of the researched topic and its relevance to health and society.

Development: Detailed description of the work done. This will include the theory behind the research topic, the methodology used, explanation of the steps followed, and the results obtained, expressed as the knowledge and awareness gained by the students.

Conclusions: Summary of the main points discussed during the project and the debate. Reflection on what was learned, conclusions drawn, and any relevant observations on the topic.

Bibliography: List of sources used in the research.

Students should use this project to develop teamwork, research, critical thinking, and public debate skills. They will also gain the necessary awareness about the use of anabolic steroids, their implications on health and society.
