Physics is a science in which its concepts are applicable in practically all aspects of our lives. The study of generators and receivers is one of those parts of Physics that has applications in many aspects of our daily lives.

Generators and Receivers

Generators are devices that convert other forms of energy into electrical energy. An example of this is hydroelectric turbines that convert the potential energy of water into electrical energy. On the other hand, we have receivers, which are devices that use electrical energy to perform work, such as an electric motor or a household appliance, for example.

In a broad context, electrical energy is crucial for many aspects of our modern world, from lighting our homes to powering our computers and smartphones. Almost everything we use in our daily lives demands electrical energy to function. Understanding how this energy is generated and how devices consume it is a fundamental part of understanding how many of the devices and technologies we use daily work.

Construction and Analysis of a Simple Generator and Receiver

Project Objective

This project aims to build a simple generator and receiver using low-cost materials. Through it, students will be able to visualize and understand, in a practical and dynamic way, the operating principles of these two important devices. In addition, the project promotes teamwork, problem-solving, and the articulation of theoretical concepts with practice.

Detailed Project Description

Teams will be challenged to build their own generator and receiver. They should then carry out tests and analyses on the performance of each device, discussing the observations and results in a final report.

Required Materials

  1. 1 Roll of enameled copper wire
  2. 1 Neodymium magnet
  3. 1 Low-power LED bulb
  4. 1 Toy motor (receiver)
  5. 1 Wooden or plastic rod
  6. 1 PVC pipe
  7. Insulating tape
  8. 2 Paper clips
  9. Multimeter

Detailed Step-by-Step

Part 1: Generator Construction

  1. Wind the copper wire around the PVC pipe several times, leaving approximately 20 cm at each end.
  2. Remove the enamel from both ends of the wire with sandpaper or a utility knife.
  3. Attach the magnet to the rod so that it can be easily rotated inside the PVC pipe without touching the walls of the pipe.
  4. Attach the paper clips to the wire ends, which will be used as terminals for connection to the receiver.
  5. Your generator is ready!

Part 2: Testing the Generator

  1. Connect the generator terminals to the multimeter input.
  2. Rotate the magnet inside the PVC pipe and observe the multimeter readings.
  3. Record the generated voltage and current values.

Part 3: Receiver Construction and Testing

  1. Connect the toy motor to the generator.
  2. Rotate the magnet inside the PVC pipe again.
  3. Observe if the motor starts running.
  4. Record your observations.

Students should write a project report containing four sections:

  1. Introduction: In this section, students should describe the project's objective, the relevance of the topic, and its real-world impact.

  2. Development: Students should explain the concepts of generators and receivers, describe in detail the construction and testing process of the devices, and discuss the results obtained. They should include images of the built devices and the graphs/data collected during the tests in this section.

  3. Conclusions: This section should contain a recap of the main points of the project, the conclusions drawn from the test results, and a discussion on what the students learned from the project.

  4. Bibliography: Students should list all information sources consulted to carry out the project.

The project report will be evaluated based on the clarity and consistency of the information presented, as well as the effective connection between theory and practice.
