Context
Physics is a fascinating science that allows us to understand how the universe works. One of the most intriguing areas of this discipline is magnetic force and its effect on electric charges. This is an area of electromagnetism, one of the four fundamental forces of physics, and it has applications in various areas of our daily lives, from electric motors to credit cards.
Magnetic force is an interaction that occurs between moving charges and magnetic fields. According to Lorentz's force law, the force that a moving electric charge experiences within a magnetic field is proportional to the velocity, charge, and magnetic field. This force is always perpendicular to the direction of the charge's movement, which can cause changes in the movement of charges, such as circular motion, for example.
Understanding magnetic force in charges is essential to comprehend modern physics and its technological applications. Charged particles moving within a magnetic field have their paths altered by the magnetic force. This understanding leads to the development of numerous technologies that are essential to our society.
Practical Activity
Title: Magnetic Maze
Project Objective
This activity aims to allow students to experience how magnetic force influences the movement of electric charges by building a magnetic maze. Students will have to develop a practical understanding of magnetic force in order to guide a charge through the maze using magnetic attraction and repulsion.
Detailed Project Description
The groups will be responsible for:
- Studying the concepts of magnetic force, magnetic field, and moving charges.
- Building a magnetic maze.
- Moving a charge through the maze using magnetic force.
Required Materials
The materials you will need are:
- Cardboard.
- Adhesive tape.
- Steel wool or iron filings.
- Small magnets.
- Marble.
- Aluminum foil.
- Electric wire.
Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity
- The first step is to study magnetic force and its relationship with moving electric charges, using the suggested sources of information and any other relevant sources you find.
- Draw a maze on the cardboard with a path for the marble to follow. The path should be wide enough for the marble to pass through easily.
- Mark the path with adhesive tape. Spread steel wool or iron filings along the entire path.
- Wrap the marble with aluminum foil so that it conducts electricity. Connect an electric wire to the marble.
- Connect the other end of the wire to one terminal of a battery. Connect a second wire to the other terminal of the battery and touch the aluminum foil with the tip of this wire.
- Use the magnets to move the marble through the maze.
Project Deliverables
At the end of the project, each group must submit a written report with the following topics:
- Introduction - Description of the concept of magnetic force, its applicability and importance, in addition to the objective of the practical activity carried out.
- Development - Detailed description of the construction process of the magnetic maze and the experience with the movement of the charge. Discussion on the effectiveness of magnetic force in directing the charge through the maze. Explanation of the concept of magnetic force and how it was used in the practical activity. Presentation and discussion of the results obtained.
- Conclusion - Discussion on the lessons learned, development of technical and socioemotional skills, as well as possible improvements for future activity implementations. Conclusions drawn from the project.
- Bibliography - Indication of the sources used for the work.
This project should be carried out by groups of 3 to 5 students and should take between two to four hours per student to complete, with a one-week deadline.
