Context

Theoretical Introduction

It is essential to understand that a material's ability to expand or contract with temperature changes has significant implications in many aspects of everyday life - from the design of bridges and buildings to food preparation and medication.

To deepen the understanding of these concepts, it is also important to explore topics such as Coefficient of Thermal Expansion, Relative Humidity, Atmospheric Pressure, Boiling Point, and the capillarity phenomenon.

Context

In real life, the expansion of liquids and containers can be observed in many situations, such as the expansion of water in a kettle or wine in a bottle. For example, if a bottle filled with wine is left open and under intense heat, the cork may be pushed out due to the expansion of the wine.

In engineering, the concept of liquid expansion is essential. Engineers need to take into account the expansion of materials when designing structures, such as bridges and buildings, that may be exposed to temperature variations. In fact, failure to consider liquid expansion can lead to serious problems, such as leaks in tanks and pipelines.

Therefore, understanding the behavior of liquid expansion in containers is crucial not only for physics but also for engineering, chemistry, and many other fields.

Activity Title: "Measuring Liquid Expansion in Containers"

Project Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with the practical experience of observing and measuring the phenomenon of liquid expansion in containers. Through this activity, students will better understand the physical processes that occur when a liquid in a container is subjected to a temperature change.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be grouped into teams of 3 to 5 people. In an estimated period of 12 hours, the group must carry out various activities, including theoretical research, planning and execution of an experiment, analysis of the collected data, discussion of the results, and writing a final report.

Part of the challenge of this project is coordination and collaboration within the group. Students will need to work together to make decisions, solve problems, and share responsibilities. The purpose is for each group member to contribute equally to the project.

Required Materials

  1. Glass container.
  2. Liquid (e.g. water).
  3. Thermostat (or alternatively, a stove).
  4. Thermometer.
  5. Measuring tape or ruler.
  6. Scale.
  7. Calculator.
  8. Materials for report writing (e.g. notebook, text editing software).

Detailed Step-by-Step

  1. Start the activity with a theoretical study on liquid expansion, coefficient of thermal expansion, atmospheric pressure, boiling point, and capillarity phenomenon. Refer to the suggested references in the introduction.
  2. Discuss with your group and decide on an action plan for the experiment. Define the responsibilities of each group member.
  3. Collect all materials needed for the experiment. Ensure that all group members understand the purpose of each material.
  4. Heat the liquid in the glass container, monitoring and recording the temperature and volume of the liquid at each pre-established time interval.
