Magnetism: Force on Current-Carrying Wire

Contextualization:

Physics is part of our daily lives, whether we recognize it or not. One fascinating concept is the Force in Wire with Current, essential for understanding the modern world, as it is fundamental in the electrical and electronic technologies we use today.

The magnetic force on a wire conducting electric current is one of the most fundamental concepts in electromagnetism. This force plays a crucial role in many electrical and electronic devices that populate our world, from the simplest ones, such as electric motors, to the most complex ones, like medical imaging equipment using magnetic resonance imaging.

Electric motors, for example, operate based on the principle of the magnetic force acting on a wire conducting current in a magnetic field. This force can be used to generate mechanical movement. In magnetic resonance imaging, the magnetic fields generated by electric currents are used to align the atoms in the human body and generate detailed images of internal organs.

Introduction

The concept of force in wire with current is an integral part of the study of electromagnetism. This is the phenomenon that occurs when a conductor of electricity is placed inside a magnetic field, and a force is exerted on this wire, called magnetic force.

The magnetic force is one of the four fundamental forces of nature and is given by the formula F = i(L x B), where i is the electric current, L is the length of the wire, B is the magnetic field, and x is the cross product. This means that the force is perpendicular to the plane formed by the electric current and the magnetic field.

Calculating this force is essential for understanding many topics in physics and engineering, including the operation of electric motors, electric generators, and energy storage devices, among others.

For this project, you will need to understand these concepts and see how they apply in practice, conducting experiments and performing relevant calculations.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Strength and Motion: An Experiment with Conductive Wires and Currents

Project Objective:

The main objective of this project is to provide students with a comprehensive practical experience to understand the effects of magnetic force on conductive wires with electric current and gain experience in solving related problems.

Groups will need to create a simple experiment to visualize the magnetic force acting on a wire conducting current, calculate the magnetic force, and finally use their results to make predictions and analyses.

Detailed Project Description:

Students will set up a simple experiment where they can see the magnetic force acting on a wire conducting current. They will then calculate the magnetic force based on the parameters of their experiment. Finally, they will use this information to make predictions about the behavior of electrical and electronic devices in different situations.

Required Materials:

  1. Conductive wire
  2. Power source (batteries)
  3. Magnet
  4. Support to keep the wire suspended
  5. Multimeter or ammeter to measure the electric current
  6. Scale to measure the weight of the magnet
  7. Ruler or tape measure to measure the length of the wire

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Set up the experiment so that the conductive wire is suspended and connected to the power source.
  2. Place the magnet near the wire, but do not let it touch the wire.
  3. Turn on the power source to allow the electric current to flow through the wire.
  4. Observe what happens to the wire when the electric current is turned on.
  5. Use the multimeter to measure the current flowing through the wire.
  6. Use the scale to measure the weight of the magnet.
  7. Use the ruler to measure the length of the wire.
  8. Based on your observations and measurements, calculate the magnetic force acting on the wire.

This project is intended for groups of 3 to 5 students. The duration is expected to be between five and ten hours, with a deadline of one month.

For the report, students should document the steps of their experiment in enough detail for a colleague to be able to reproduce it. This includes the description of the experiment settings, the measured and calculated values, the procedures followed, the problems encountered and how they were solved, as well as the conclusions drawn.

Project Delivery

At the end of the project, students should prepare a comprehensive report. The report should include the following topics:

  1. Introduction: Provide context for the theme, its relevance, and real-world applications. Define the project's objective and the steps taken to achieve it.

  2. Development: Detailed description of the theory behind the experiment, the experiment itself, the methodology used, the data collected, and the calculations made. Also include here the discussion of the results obtained.

  3. Conclusion: Summarize the learnings, challenges faced and overcome, conclusions drawn about the experiment, and suggestions for future improvements or experiments.

  4. Bibliography: List all sources that helped you understand the concepts and design and conduct the experiment.

Remember that the main goal of this project is to learn about forces in wires with current, but also to gain experience in teamwork, time management, problem-solving, and effective communication.
