Background
Specific heat is a fundamental concept within the study of Physics. It is a concept that is closely linked to the idea of the temperature change that a given material undergoes when it receives a certain amount of heat, without necessarily undergoing a change in physical state. The formula that expresses this relationship is Q = m. c. Δt, where Q is the amount of heat, m is the mass of the material, c is the specific heat of the material and Δt is the change in temperature.
To understand specific heat, we need to understand the idea of heat. Heat is a form of energy that is transferred from one body to another due to the difference in temperature. Do not confuse it with temperature which is a measure of the degree of agitation of molecules.
Now, something that is absolutely essential is the idea of the specific heat of a material. Specific heat is a quantity that defines the amount of heat that is necessary to increase the temperature of 1g of a material by 1°C. Each material has a different specific heat, which indicates that different materials need different amounts of heat to undergo the same temperature change.
The concept of specific heat is widely applied in our daily lives and in industry. For example, when we cook or bake something, we need to provide heat so that the temperature of the food increases. In another situation, in civil construction, materials with different specific heats are used depending on the climatic conditions of a place to ensure the thermal comfort of the buildings.
Heat transfer and control of temperature variations are essential in areas such as mechanical engineering, where refrigeration and air conditioning systems are designed. Many of our appliances, such as refrigerators and freezers, work based on the principles of heat transfer and specific heat.

Activity title: Exploring Specific Heat.
Project objective: To understand in practice the concept of Specific Heat through an experiment. To develop teamwork, planning, conducting and analyzing experiments, communication and documentation of results skills.
Project description
The groups will conduct a simple experiment to measure and compare the specific heat of different substances. From the data collected, they should calculate the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of the substances by 1°C and compare the results with each other and with theoretical values available in the literature.
This project not only reinforces the understanding of the concept of specific heat but also promotes the development of technical and socio-emotional skills.
Required materials
- Three different types of substances in equal amounts (for example, 200g of water, oil and sand)
- Thermometer
- Stove or heat source
- Precision scale
- Chronometer
Step by step

Form groups of 3 to 5 people. Each group will conduct the experiment and prepare a report.

Weigh an equal amount of the three substances and record the values.

Heat a predetermined amount of each substance for a certain period of time, using the same heat source.

Use the thermometer to measure the initial and final temperature of each substance and write down the values.

Calculate the temperature change for each substance.

From the temperature change, the mass of each substance and the amount of heat supplied, calculate the specific heat of each substance.

Compare the results obtained with each other and with the theoretical values available in the literature.

Analyze the results obtained and prepare a detailed report on the experiment.
Written document
From the results of the experiment, each group should prepare a report containing the following topics:
Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, relevance and application of specific heat in the real world. Describe the objective of the project and the experiment carried out.
Development: Detailed explanation of the experiment, including the materials used, the procedure performed and the calculations involved. Present the results obtained, your observations and discussions about them. Make a comparison between the results obtained and the theoretical values consulted in the literature.
Conclusion: Make a critical analysis of the results obtained. What were the lessons learned? What do the results say about the specific heat of the substances analyzed? What could have been done differently? What were the limitations and challenges encountered?
Bibliography: Indicate all sources of information consulted for the project, whether to learn about specific heat, to plan and conduct the experiment or to write the report.
Remember, this report is not only about the results of the experiment, but also about the teamwork experience, the process of planning and executing the experiment, data analysis and communication of the results.
