Introduction

The world of work has undergone significant transformations since the Industrial Revolution, increasingly frequent and intense in the context of Globalization and the Technological Revolution. Faced with these changes, the question arises: how do they affect people's lives, the organization of societies, and, especially, how do work processes occur in contemporary times?

The Sociology of Work aims to analyze changes in modes of production and labor relations throughout history, observing factors such as work specialization, forms of hiring, working conditions, and the relationship between work and society. It also plays a role in analyzing the division of labor, which is a fundamental characteristic of modernity. Thus, understanding the changes and the organization of the world of work is of fundamental importance to understand contemporary social structures.

In this sense, it is important to understand the different forms of work and the transformations in modern work, ranging from industrialization and Fordism to globalization, neoliberalism, and the digital age. Furthermore, it is essential to analyze the social, economic, and environmental implications of these changes, as well as possible solutions to the challenges they pose.

Contextualization

The organization and transformations of the world of work are directly related to ways of life and social organization. Work is not only a means of survival but also a large part of how we identify ourselves and how we interact with each other. Changes in the world of work reflect and affect the way society is organized.

Furthermore, the world of work is deeply connected to the global economy. Globalization and digitalization, for example, have led to new forms of work, such as remote work and project-based work. These changes have profound implications for social inequality, workers' rights, and quality of life. Therefore, understanding these changes and the organization of work is essential to understand the world we live in.

Activity Title

"The World of Work in the 21st Century: Challenges and Possibilities"

Activity Objective

The objective of this project is to provide students with an in-depth and multifaceted analysis of the world of work in the 21st century, developing a critical understanding of its main transformations, challenges, and possibilities. To this end, it is expected that students deepen their theoretical knowledge and apply it to the analysis of concrete case(s) of work organizations today.

Detailed Project Description

Students will be organized into groups of 3 to 5 members, being able to choose a work organization for a case study. The chosen organization can be local/national/international and can belong to any sector (i.e., public, private, third sector). Attention should be paid to the representativeness of the chosen case and justify such choice.

The project will be divided into four distinct stages, which will be developed over consecutive weeks:

1. Identification and analysis of the organization: Groups must identify the chosen organization and conduct in-depth research on its history, structure, business model, work practices, and any other aspects relevant to understanding its work organization.

2. Interviews and data collection: Groups must conduct interviews with employees, managers, and/or other relevant stakeholders of the chosen organization. They must also collect secondary data, such as financial reports, news articles, and other available information.

3. Data analysis: Groups must analyze the collected data, using the concepts and theories studied in sociology, economics, and other relevant disciplines for the analysis.

4. Presentation of results and debate: Finally, each group will present their case study and conclusions in an oral presentation to the other students and teachers. After the presentation, there will be a debate on the presented case studies.

Necessary Materials

The completion of this project requires internet access for research, data collection, and communication with the selected organization, if necessary. In addition, students will need notebooks or laptops to take notes on the collected information and prepare the final report.

Activity Step-by-Step

1. Formation of groups and choice of organization for the study: Form groups of 3 to 5 students and choose the organization for analysis.
2. Identification and analysis of the organization: Conduct in-depth research on the chosen organization.
3. Interviews and data collection: Conduct interviews with people involved in the organization and collect relevant data.
4. Data analysis: Analyze the collected data and interpret it in light of the theoretical concepts studied.
5. Presentation of results and debate: Prepare an oral presentation of the results for the class and participate in a debate on the presented case studies.

Delivery Criteria

Groups must submit a final report, of at least 15 pages, presenting and discussing the analysis results. The report must contain:

Introduction: In this section, students must contextualize the theme of the work, present the chosen organization for the case study, and explain the relevance of this study for understanding the changes and organization of the world of work.

Development: In this section, students must present the theory related to the theme of the work, explain the activities carried out in detail, present the methodology used, and discuss the results obtained.

Conclusion: In this section, students must summarize the main points of the work, discuss the learnings obtained, and conclude on the implications of their findings for understanding the change and organization of the world of work.

Bibliography: In this section, students must list all sources used for the work, following the standard reference format.

In addition to the report, groups must prepare an oral presentation of the results, which should last between 15 and 20 minutes. The presentation should summarize the main results of the work and stimulate debate on the topic.
