The harmful effects of inequality are evident in many aspects of Brazilians' lives, from the quality of education and healthcare they receive to job opportunities, social mobility, and life expectancy.

Inequality is not only an ethical and social problem but also an obstacle to economic and social development. Studies show that more egalitarian societies tend to have better socioeconomic indicators, such as higher life expectancy, better educational outcomes, and greater overall life satisfaction.

To better understand social inequality, you will be invited to investigate the topic, analyze its causes and consequences, and propose possible solutions. This project will require research skills, data analysis, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Activity Title: "Mapping Inequality"

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to conduct an in-depth analysis of social inequality at a local level, using the city or region where the students reside as a basis. This project will require extensive research, data collection, analysis, and critical reflection on the information gathered.

Detailed Project Description:

This project is divided into specific steps, including: research and data collection, data analysis, planning and implementation of a practical action, writing a final report, and presenting the work to the class.

Required Materials:

• Internet access for research,
• Writing materials (computer, paper, pen, etc.),
• Graphics/diagrams creation software (Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or similar),
• Camera to document the process/result of the practical action.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

1. Research and Data Collection: Students should research social inequality in their municipality/region. Data can be obtained from government websites, NGOs, academic articles, local newspapers, among others. Students should collect data related to various areas such as income, education, health, housing, among others.

2. Data Analysis: After collecting the data, students should conduct an analysis. They should create graphs for better data visualization and identify the main disparities. They should also make connections between this data and the theoretical topics learned in class, such as social stratification, human capital theory, poverty theories, among others.

3. Practical Action: Based on the research and data analysis, students should plan a practical action aimed at elucidating, denouncing, or mitigating a specific aspect of inequality in their community. This action can be an awareness event, a book or food collection campaign, an interview with local leaders, the creation of a documentary, among others.

4. Report Writing: Students should write a detailed report of the project. This report should include: an introduction with the contextualization of social inequality in the world and in their city/region; the development, which should explain the research methodology, the data obtained, and the analysis conducted; the description of the practical action, with photos, testimonials, etc.; and finally their conclusions on the topic, the lessons learned, and proposals for future actions.

5. Work Presentation: Finally, each group must present their work to the class. The presentation should be clear, objective, and engaging, summarizing the main points of the report and the practical action.

Each group will consist of 3 to 5 students, and the project duration should be approximately three weeks.

Project Delivery:

Students must submit the complete report in PDF format and present the work to the class.

The report must strictly follow the given guidelines: containing Introduction, Development (with an explanation of the methodology used, the data collected, and the analysis conducted), the description of the practical action, and the conclusion of the work. In addition, the report must have an extensive bibliography, indicating all the sources on which the students relied to research and develop the project.

It is expected that with this activity, students deepen their understanding of social inequality, observe how this phenomenon manifests in their local context, and develop research skills, teamwork, critical analysis, and academic writing.
