Mass Culture

Contextualization

Society lives in constant movement and change, where information is produced and disseminated rapidly. In this scenario, mass culture occupies a prominent place, being a fundamental phenomenon for understanding contemporary social dynamics. The term 'mass culture' is used to describe a type of popular culture that is produced by a reduced number of people for the consumption of the majority of the population. In this sense, mass culture includes various cultural products such as music, movies, TV programs, news, magazines, advertisements, social networks, and others.

The production and consumption of these cultural products are not random; on the contrary, they reflect the social, economic, political, and cultural processes in which they are embedded. Mass culture, therefore, is a form of expression that highlights aspects of social structure and dynamics. What we consume, how we consume, and which narratives are valued tell us a lot about who we are as a society.

The study of mass culture is, therefore, a window to understanding modern and contemporary societies, offering a lens to analyze social interactions, values, circulating ideologies, power dynamics, and identity formation.

Importance of Mass Culture

We live in a society saturated with images, sounds, texts, and meanings produced by mass media. Social networks, streaming platforms, online news, podcasts, among others, are a fundamental part of our lives. These cultural expressions affect us in different ways, shaping our perceptions of the world, our identities, our interpersonal relationships, our beliefs, and our behaviors.

Mass culture, with its global reach and its impact on our daily lives, is a fascinating and complex phenomenon. It challenges us to think about issues such as the concentration of power in cultural production, the formation of a homogenized or diversified global culture, the reproduction of stereotypes and prejudices, the role of consumption in identity formation, among other issues.

In our journey to understand mass culture, you can use the following resources:

  1. Mass Culture in the 20th Century: Myths and Structures - Edgar Morin, a fundamental book that presents mass culture as a multifaceted and complex phenomenon.

  2. Mass Culture and Society - Stuart Hall, a collection of essays by the author that offers a broad overview and a critical look at mass culture.

  3. Nerdologia Channel, a YouTube channel that presents various topics related to mass culture in a didactic and accessible way.

  4. Meteoro Brasil Channel, a YouTube channel that analyzes movies, series, music, and other expressions of mass culture from a sociological perspective.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Massive Culture: Analysis and Production of Cultural Materials'

Project Objective:

This project aims to deepen students' understanding of mass culture through the analysis of different cultural materials and the production of their own cultural product, reflecting the group's view on issues related to contemporary society.

Detailed Project Description:

The project will be carried out in groups of 3 to 5 students and is expected to require five to ten hours of work per student, to be carried out over a month.

The project consists of two main parts:

  1. Analysis of Cultural Materials: Groups must choose two types of cultural products (music, series, movies, TV programs, games, news, advertisements, among others) and conduct an in-depth analysis of how they portray certain aspects of society and the values and ideologies at play. Groups should choose at least one cultural product produced by a major media company and one cultural product produced independently or alternatively. The idea is to explore the differences and similarities between these productions and reflect on the impact they have on society.

  2. Production of a Cultural Product: After the analysis, groups must produce their own cultural product (a short film, a song, a game, a report, a podcast, a thematic Instagram, among others). This product should reflect the group's view on a relevant issue related to mass culture, such as the issue of consumption, the representation of marginalized groups, the influence of technology, among others.

Required Materials:

Only a means to jot down ideas and elaborate reports, such as papers and pens or a computer with a word processor. For the cultural production part, depending on what they choose to do, they may need a camera (a smartphone can suffice), video or audio editing software, or other specific materials.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Carrying Out the Activity:

  1. Formation of groups and selection of cultural materials to be analyzed.

  2. Analysis of cultural materials, using sociological theoretical tools and based on bibliographical references. Each group should note the main characteristics of the materials, their production context, the ideas and values they express, and discuss their social implications.

  3. Production of the cultural material. Groups must develop a script or plan and execute it. Creativity is encouraged, as well as critical reflection.

  4. Preparation of the report. The report should contain the following structure and content:

    • Introduction: Present the theme, justifying its relevance and explaining the project's objective.

    • Development: Describe in detail the analysis of cultural materials, mentioning the theoretical theories used and discussing the results. Then, describe the production of the cultural material, including a reflection on the process, the message, and the challenges faced. Attach or provide a link to the produced cultural material.

    • Conclusions: Summarize the main points, highlighting the learnings and conclusions drawn about mass culture from the project.

    • Bibliography: List the sources consulted for the project, including books, websites, videos, among others.

The document should be submitted by email to the teacher on the last day of the stipulated deadline.

Connection Between Activities and the Final Product:

The analysis and production of cultural materials will allow students to explore the theoretical concepts of mass culture in a practical and concrete way. The final report will not only provide the opportunity to express their findings and reflections but also to exercise their writing skills, critical argumentation, and teamwork.
