Contextualization

Human coexistence is central to our existence, being decisive for who we are as individuals and society. Since primitive times, humans have formed groups to better survive and thrive. Through complex social interactions, we build cultures, develop technologies, and establish structured societies. Sociology, as a discipline, seeks to unravel, understand, and explain these social interaction phenomena.

Within Sociology, human coexistence is seen not only as a survival need but also as an important mechanism for learning and shaping personal and collective identity. During these interactions, knowledge, values, norms, and customs are transmitted, forming the basis of culture and social order.

However, despite the highly social nature of the human species, the phenomenon of social isolation is also an integral part of our reality. Often, isolation is self-imposed and can occur as a result of a conscious decision by the individual. However, it can also be a consequence of mental health conditions, social discrimination, or global events such as pandemics.

Human coexistence and social isolation are intrinsically linked to how we use technology. We observe that information technologies, such as digital social networks, can both bring together physically distant people and trigger the phenomenon of accompanied loneliness, where the individual feels isolated even amidst a multitude of virtual connections.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: "The Web of Coexistence: Connection and Social Isolation in the Digital Age"

Project Objective

To explore students' understanding of the concepts of human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation in the context of contemporary society, considering especially the role of information and communication technologies.

Detailed Project Description

Students, divided into groups of 3 to 5 members, will be encouraged to investigate and discuss, through case studies, how social relations are shaped in a world increasingly permeated by digital technologies, both fostering interactions and leading to isolation.

Required Materials

1. Internet access.
2. Writing and note-taking materials.
3. Computer or mobile device for research and report preparation.

Detailed Step-by-Step

1. Divide into groups of 3 to 5 students. Each group should choose a case study that illustrates a situation of coexistence and/or social isolation in contemporary society. This case may involve individuals, communities, social movements, among others, and how they relate to information and communication technologies.

2. Research the chosen case. This research should include reading academic articles, news, blogs, videos, podcasts, among other available and relevant resources.

3. Discuss, as a group, the particularities of the selected case, focusing on aspects of coexistence and/or social isolation. Analyze how information and communication technologies are involved in interactions, and what their positive and negative impacts are.

4. After completing the research and discussion, write a group report. This report should be divided into four topics: Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used.

   • In the introduction, the group should contextualize the case study, its relevance in the current sociocultural context, and the project's objectives.

   • In the development, the group should detail the theory about human coexistence, social interaction, and isolation, explain the case study in detail, the methodology used in the research, and present and discuss the results obtained based on the researched information.

   • In the conclusion, the group should summarize the main points of the project, highlight the most significant learnings obtained, and critically reflect on the role of technologies in human coexistence and social isolation.

   • The bibliography should indicate all sources used during the research, including books, articles, websites, videos, etc.

5. The final submission will consist of the digital format report and an oral presentation (one person from each group presenting to the class), in which students share the main results of their work, in a total time of 10 minutes per group.

This project should be completed within one week, and the workload is estimated to be two to four hours per student, distributed during this period.
