Introduction

Social inequality is a reality experienced worldwide, characterized by the economic and social distance between different groups or classes within a society. It is a complex phenomenon, with historical roots and profound implications that directly or indirectly affect everyone's lives.

Social inequality is a significant barrier to development and progress, impacting education, health, security, and people's quality of life. Researchers and academics from various fields have been working to understand and propose solutions to this issue, but the task is challenging.

Sociology, as the study of social relations, plays a central role in evaluating and understanding this problem. Through its own theories and methods, this discipline provides tools to question the social order that perpetuates inequality and to propose ways of transformation.

Contextualization

We live in a deeply unequal society. In Brazil, for example, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the wealthiest 1% of the population holds almost 1/4 of the national income. Furthermore, according to IBGE, black and mixed-race people are more affected by poverty and unemployment, highlighting the intersection between racial and social inequality.

This reality is not exclusive to Brazil. Oxfam, an international organization working on the issue of inequality, annually publishes a report called 'Time to Care,' which highlights global wealth disparities. According to the 2020 report, 2,153 billionaires have more wealth than 4.6 billion people, approximately 60% of the world's population.

Studying social inequality not only allows us to better understand the reality we live in but also enables us to reflect on possible solutions and actions to build a fairer and more egalitarian society.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Unveiling Social Inequality: A Sociological Perspective'

Project Objective:

To understand and reflect on the issue of social inequality through the analysis and discussion of available data, information, and research. Develop research, interpretation, and information synthesis skills, as well as stimulate teamwork, critical thinking, and argumentation.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups of students, consisting of 3 to 5 members, will conduct research and discussions on social inequality. To do this, they will use data, research, documentaries, texts, and suggested reports as references within the project context and others they deem relevant. Based on their research, each group must create a written report and a slide presentation that clearly and comprehensively conveys the reality and impacts of social inequality.

Required Materials:

• Computer with internet access
• Slide creation program (Google Slides, PowerPoint, etc.)
• Text editor for report writing (Word, Google Docs, etc.)

Detailed Step-by-Step Guide for the Activity:

1. Group formation and task distribution: each member should have a specific task (data research, report elaboration, presentation creation, etc.)

2. Reference research: the group must gather data and information on social inequality from the suggested sources and others they consider relevant. At this stage, organization is essential so that all collected information is analyzed and used.

3. Group discussion: after the research, the group should meet to discuss the collected information, identify key points, and decide how to convey this information in the report and presentation.

4. Report writing: following the proposed format (Introduction, Development, Conclusions, and Bibliography used), the group must write a comprehensive report on social inequality.

5. Slide creation: the presentation should be concise yet comprehensive, containing the main points of the written report.

6. Final review: before submission, the group must review both the report and the presentation to ensure that everything is correct and complete.

Project Deliverables:

• Written report: the document should follow the proposed format, where in the Introduction, the group will contextualize the social inequality theme and define the research objectives. In the Development section, they will explain the theory of the theme, describe the methodology used, and present and discuss the results obtained from the research. In the Conclusion, they will summarize the main points of the work, the lessons learned, and the conclusions on the theme. In the Bibliography, they will list all sources used for the project.

• Slide presentation: the slide should contain a synthesis of the main information from the report, serving as a visual presentation of the key points discussed.

The generated documents (report and slide presentation) must be submitted within one week. They will be evaluated not only on content but also on information organization, clarity of expression, creativity, and research quality.
