Realist Literature

Contextualization

Realist novels were a direct response to the idealism of the preceding romantic movement. This artistic approach emerged in the 19th century, amidst notable scientific advances and socio-economic changes. Realism arose as an attempt to represent life in the most accurate way possible, without the excess of romanticism or the extremes of naturalism.

Realist writers tried to write about everyday realities and experiences with which most people could identify. They portrayed characters with flaws and ambiguous heroes. Gone were the romantic ideals of perfect heroes and heroines; here, instead, were real people in common situations. Absolutely nothing was considered banal or off-limits.

In Brazil, Realism has in Machado de Assis its main exponent. His work differs from the European one by containing a more psychological analysis of the characters. Other authors also stood out in this period, such as Aluísio Azevedo and Raul Pompeia.

Importance of Realist Literature

Realist Literature is important because it strives to portray life as it is, with all its imperfections. It avoids excessive embellishments, fantasies, clichés, and simplistic black and white. Instead, it presents life in its many shades of gray, a more honest and often more intriguing view of human existence.

Furthermore, realist literature has the potential to make us think more critically about the world around us. It challenges our perceptions and forces us to question our assumptions. Through the realist lens, we are able to examine social, political, and personal issues in a deeper and more considered way.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: A Deep Dive into Realism

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to allow students the opportunity to dive headfirst into the realist movement, exploring its origins, its main writers, the characteristics of this literary school, and its influence on current society.

It is expected that each group will be able to solidify their knowledge about Realism through an immersive and enriching experience, involving the disciplines of Portuguese and History.

Detailed Project Description:

The project will be developed over six weeks, with groups composed of 3 to 5 students. Each group will conduct in-depth research, analyze literary texts, and finally create a multimedia presentation highlighting their discoveries and understanding of Realism.

Required Materials:

  1. Internet access for research.
  2. Copies of relevant texts by realist authors.
  3. Tools for creating multimedia presentations (e.g., PowerPoint, Prezi, Canva).

Detailed Step-by-Step:

  1. Week 1-2: Research and Study – Groups should research in-depth the history and context of the realist movement. This includes understanding the origin, historical context, main authors, and their works. Additionally, groups should analyze at least two works by realist authors, making notes on the present realist characteristics.

  2. Week 3-4: Text Analysis – Groups will focus on analyzing the chosen works. They should identify and discuss themes, characters, plot, language use, and literary techniques in the work, always focusing on realist characteristics.

  3. Week 5: Presentation Production – Groups should prepare a multimedia presentation where they will present their findings and analyses. The presentation should be creative and engage the audience, using different multimedia resources.

  4. Week 6: Presentation and Evaluation – Each group will present their project to the class. Presentations will be followed by a classroom discussion, where students can express their opinions and ask questions.

Project Deliverables:

After completing the practical activity, students should prepare a written report detailing their journey during the project.

  1. Introduction: Contextualization of Realism, its relevance, and the project's objective.
  2. Development: Theoretical discussion about Realism, the methodology of the practical activity, project execution details, and the results obtained.
  3. Conclusion: Recapitulation of the main points, lessons learned, and conclusions drawn from the project.
  4. Bibliography: Sources used during the project, including books, websites, videos, and others.

This report should be submitted one week after the final presentation. The report should contain a reflection on what students learned during the project, their difficulties, how they overcame challenges, and what skills they developed. Additionally, students should link theory with practice, showing how the project contributed to their understanding of Realism.
