Adjective Clauses

Contextualization

Welcome to our project on 'Adjective Clauses'! This topic is a fundamental element in the grammar of the Portuguese language and plays an important role in the construction of texts and speeches. Through it, we can qualify, quantify, and define characteristics about the noun they refer to.

Adjective Clauses are composed of a main clause and a subordinate adjective clause. The main clause is the one that has a complete meaning and can function independently. The adjective subordinate clause, on the other hand, comes after the main clause and aims to qualify, restrict, or expand the meaning of a noun present in the main clause.

Within the adjective subordinate clauses, we have two main types: restrictive and explanatory. Restrictive clauses are used to limit or particularize the noun, while explanatory clauses present a characteristic of the noun that may be useful but is not essential for understanding the sentence.

Now you must be wondering, what is the importance of Adjective Clauses? In our daily communication, they are essential to provide more details about what we are talking about, allowing us to be more specific and clear. Furthermore, in formal situations such as college entrance exams, public contests, and even in the ENEM essay, the correct understanding and use of adjective clauses can make a difference.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: 'Adjectivizing Our Reality'

Project Objective:

The objective of this project is to apply the acquired knowledge about Adjective Clauses in the identification, analysis, and creation of texts that use this grammatical structure.

Detailed Project Description:

Groups should conduct research in journalistic, literary, and academic texts in search of examples of Adjective Clauses. After identifying and analyzing the examples, each group should produce a short documentary video presenting their findings and explaining the use and importance of Adjective Clauses in the researched texts.

Required Materials:

  • Internet access for text and example research;
  • Video camera (can be a smartphone) for recording the documentary;
  • Video editing program.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution:

  1. Form groups of three to five students.
  2. Research examples of Adjective Clauses in journalistic, literary, and academic texts. Identify both restrictive and explanatory clauses.
  3. Analyze the examples found and discuss how the use of Adjective Clauses influences the message of the text.
  4. Plan and script a documentary video presenting the research results. The documentary should include an explanation of Adjective Clauses, the examples found, the analysis of these examples, and how they affect the message of the text in which they are inserted.
  5. Record the documentary according to the script. Remember: creativity in video production is very welcome!
  6. Edit the video and prepare it for the final presentation.

Project Deliverables:

The group must deliver the documentary video and a written report detailing the work done.

The report should include:

  • Introduction: Contextualization of the theme, its relevance and application in the real world, as well as the objective of this project.
  • Development: Explanation about Adjective Clauses, how they were identified and analyzed in the texts, and the methodology used to produce the documentary.
  • Conclusions: Discussion on the results obtained, what was learned from the experience, and how the knowledge about Adjective Clauses can be applied in other contexts.
  • Bibliography: Indication of the sources used in the research.

Evaluation will be based on the quality of the documentary, compliance with the steps of this activity, and the depth and clarity of the written report.
