Reference is essentially a matter of relationships within the text: one element refers to another, a concept is introduced and then referred to again.

It is so ingrained in our language that we use it constantly, even without realizing it. When we say, 'She is a good friend, I can always count on her,' the pronoun 'she' is a reference to the entity 'a good friend.' Thus, referencing is the cornerstone of discourse articulation, helping in the chaining of ideas and avoiding unnecessary repetition, contributing to textual cohesion and coherence.

Now, why is this important? Imagine reading a text that constantly repeated the same words or phrases. It would be tiring, repetitive, and probably difficult to follow. But with reference, we can follow a line of reasoning, understand the relationships between the parts of a text, and maintain the reader's engagement. Furthermore, your competence in referencing will be decisive in textual productions, such as essays for entrance exams and competitions, for example.

In addition to the academic context, it is present in all forms of verbal interaction we have in our daily lives, from an informal conversation to a work meeting. Mastering this technique is crucial for good communication and, consequently, good social, professional, and academic performance.

Practical Activity

Activity Title: Analysis of Referencing in Discourses

Project Objective

To provide students with the opportunity to put into practice the theoretical concepts of referencing. They will analyze texts from different contexts (literary, journalistic, informal conversations, etc.) to identify and analyze the processes of referencing.

Detailed Project Description

In this project, groups of 3 to 5 students will work together to analyze the different uses of referencing in texts ranging from a literary novel, a news article to a dialogue from an informal conversation. In the end, they will produce a detailed written report of their observations and conclusions.

Detailed Step-by-Step for Activity Execution

1. Theory Review: First, students should review the concept of referencing and its main characteristics. This step is crucial for a complete understanding of the activity.
2. Text Selection: Each group should select three texts from different contexts (one literary, one journalistic, and one dialogue from an informal conversation).
3. Text Analysis: Students will analyze each text, identifying and marking all examples of referencing they find.
4. Group Discussion: Next, the group should discuss the results of the analysis, comparing the uses of referencing in different contexts.
5. Report Production: Based on the analysis and discussions, students will prepare a written report.
